PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- Officers responding to a report of an exorcism on a young girl found her grandfather choking her and used stun guns to subdue the man, who later died, authorities said Sunday.

The 3-year-old girl and her mother, who was also in the room during the struggle between 49-year-old Ronald Marquez and officers, were hospitalized, police said. Their condition was unavailable.

The relative who called police said an exorcism had also been attempted Thursday.

"The purpose was to release demons from this very young child," said Sgt. Joel Tranter.

Officers arrived at the house Saturday and entered when they heard screaming coming from a bedroom, Tranter said.

A bed had been pushed up against the door; the officers pushed it open a few inches and saw Marquez choking his bloodied granddaughter, who was crying in pain and gasping, Tranter said.

A bloody, naked 19-year-old woman who police later determined to be Marquez's daughter and the girl's mother was in the room,

chanting "something that was religious in nature," Tranter said.

The officers forced open the door enough for one to enter, leading to a struggle in which an officer used a stun gun on Marquez, Tranter said.

After the initial stun had no visible effect, another officer squeezed into the room and stunned him. The girl was freed and passed through the door to the relative, Tranter said.

Marquez was placed in handcuffs after a struggle with officers and initially appeared normal, but then stopped breathing, Tranter said.

He could not be revived and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The cause of death was not immediately known, and autopsy results probably will not be available for several weeks, Tranter said.

Tranter declined to identify Marquez's daughter and granddaughter but said they lived in the house with Marquez.

The mother was not arrested, but police will consider criminal charges, Tranter said.

There was no phone listing at Ronald Marquez's address.

You know what's really disturbing to me? The number of chrisitans that have no clue what "symptoms" were being exhibited in the little 3 year old girl, but say he may have been right that she actually needed one. The child is 3 years old, she barely has a grasp of the english language, I seriously doubt there was ANYTHING that she could have been doing that couldn't be attributed to the actions, speech, and practices of the people around her, namely her mom and grandfather. Those were the ones in need of spiritual and psychiatric therapy. And the chrisitans that are sticking up for this creep... I hope you realize that you are perfect examples of why atheists call you deluded and brain-washed. Find out what REALLY happened first, then decide whether or not your fellow religious zealot diagnosed the problem correctly. Otherwise, you prove that you are just as crazy as him, and are a possible danger to your own children, as well as the children of others.

Unfortunately death is the result of many exorcisms. What a tragedy, considering that "possession" is nothing but self-delusion. If you doubt my assessment watch the videos yourself. There is nothing in them that suggests anything supernatural is going on.

This is child abuse. But what can you expect from an obviously uneducated family. She was 19 with a 3 year old and they were both living with her father. Just another example of superstition resulting in death.

I personally don't think this man was right, it just proves to me that religion hurts people{my opinion} and that is why I do not believe in any sort of religion or god I believe in following my own path not one that is forced upon me which this man was doing to a innocent girl.
He believed that she was possessed but there was more than likely no hard evidence of this, but he decided to try to kill her to force the demons out.
How can this be justified?

If the parents had killed her, as the parents of the true story behind "Emily Rose" had done to their child, maybe they, too, could've been seen as "heros" not murderers.

Do these exact actions without religious nonsense attached and you're a "sadistic child abuser" to most people....

Funny, I don't think the words chanted changes the actions or the people.

This man, dead end thereof, was obviously Law<--Law.
Being Right of L/R Law/Law is as Deadly as being Left.
The Second, of Mt 22 Law Law is like the first: it's Law!
The 1st of Romans 8:2 Law Law is notably Sin & Death.
Law vs Law? Divided, against itself, thereby falls to ruin.
Above Left/Right Law/Law heavens it's All Right(Grace).
Christ: seated in heaven: "higher than the (L/R)heavens".
Seated denotes the Law vs Grace matter forever settled.
The God of all grace (no law) make you perfect... settled.
Pauline Epistle conclusions don't even mention any L-w:

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus-->Christ with you-->all. Amen.

No. This is not biblical exorcism. Exorcism is a very complicated matter and not to be taken lightly.

This guy was not right.

actually sounds like he was the one possessed- especially since he quit breathing so suddenly- And contrary to what others may be "fooled" into thinking- those that would harm a child in such away- are NOT followers of God.- They are of satan- who would deceive others into "thinking" it was an act of one of God's people.

Demons can take over the body, but the grandfather was not right
To exercise someone does not mean to choke them to death
Why he did it, we'll never know
