Most modern Christians have chosen to stop viewing mental impairment as 'demonic possession'.

This could be seen as progress, but as is demonstrated above, religionists still have their witch-hunts regarding other religions and gays. At least (in modern Christianity) ...such things as women with moles, and people who have a mental illness have escaped the burnings...for now.

Autism is not demon possession, it is a mental illness.

This is qualified: although all sickness doesn't mean the person is possessed or afflicted by a demon, demon possession or affliction can manifest itself as a disease or sickness.

Some possessions can emulate mental and physical sickness. Possession and affliction are complicated matters, not easily understood by many.
