You can bring a gun in your check-in luggage, you do need to notify the the airline that you do have a gun, and there are restrictions. Check your airlines website, most websites have all the info you need. I don't know the answer to your first question, I do remember when there weren't x-ray or metal detectors in airports, but since I never carried a gun on an airplane I can't say for sure. Here's the American Airlines website with information on traveling with a firearm:

The only people who can carry guns on planes are certain law enforcement officials and pilots who are classified as Federal Flight Deck Officers.
Anyone can carry an unloaded gun in their checked bag but you have to let the airline know you have it in the bag, also you can not carry any bullets. Only a unloaded gun.

Ammunition will only be accepted if it is boxed, small-arms ammunition, it weighs less than 11 pounds, and is packed in checked luggage only.

Firearms will be accepted only if they are unloaded, declared to the agent at check-in, and packed in a locked, hard-sided container in checked luggage only.

Gunpowder, mace, pepper spray, and tear gas are not allowed.

I am not sure of prior to 9/11 but I would think that you would of still had to check a handgun.

In modern times, no weapons are allowed in the cabin of any commercial plane, except those carried by marshalls and stuff...

They have always required people to check the gun or stow it in the baggage-compartment bags.

You've never been able to carry a handgun in your carry on. I believe you could carry it with checked baggage. Not sure what the regs are now.
