Good morning,

I would recommend looking at the hybrids in the low $20K's because the government is rebating up to $3,150 on smart cars.

If you buy a 2007 Ford Escape gas/electric model for $24,150 - minus a $1,000 ford rebate - $3,150 government rebate, you get a pretty nice car for $20,000. Same with Ford's Mercury Mariner.

Honda Civic also qualifies for the rebate. However, that's a small car anyway. There's really no reason to spend $19K instead of $13K for the hybrid functionality. I also like the Nissan Sentras and VW Jettas too.

It sort of depends on what you need from your car. IF you are looking for a reliable and fuel efficient commuter car, the Honda Fit or Nissan Versa are excellent choices. You could also get into a base model Civic or Corolla within your budget, but will get more car for the money with a Fit or Versa.

Depends a lot with your preferences... for me, at $2ok, go for a used 5 yr old c240 type, Mercedes Benz... You enjoy the luxury of $45k+ cars at very reasonable price.
