Lets look at this from a different point of veiw, and please be prepared for any blasphemy.
This story is the bibles version of a similar pagan tale.
It is roughly the same, but the story tells of how the first pagans believed in how holy women were.
Here's the story:
A warrior rested one morning from a coming of age battle with a lion. He perched upon the steps of a temple, and a woman emerged from a doorway opposite his seat. She invited him in and he accepted. New warriors never rejected hospitality. He followed her in, and long story short, he saw a naked woman on a platform, and was told to 'do a horizontal dance' with her. The woman got pregnant, had the kid, and was praised as holy because she was the first of the women in the temple to give birth.

Pagans believed that women were holy because of something which enabled their fertility- the uterus. The ability of child birth is unlikely whe you think of the galaxy and connect it with the number of stars in the sky and grains of sand on earth, and the fact that women are able to produce something from within makes them holy.
Your story is a version which says that women are the ones who seduce men and are therefore the original sinners. The woman bathing proves this theory. Where David covered it up that she was pregnant and had her husband killed, it suggests that he was nothing more than a selfish coward who was trying to re-write the past and say that he was was her husband because she was pregnant with his child, and to do this he had to have her real husband killed, and the easiest way was to have him in the frontlines with no protection.

When read into, the story basically says that humans are a selfish, cowardly being despite a show of selflessness and bravery.
I really hope that this explains it, because, believe it or not, this is the shortest that I can make it.
Also, discussing religious passages from holy text- not my strongest subject. Come back to me with something about wine, and then get ready for a long-winded answer!

this has always been a hard one for me too, but I would say, let the first human who has not sinned cast the first stone, really !! I am now 56 and I hate what David did, and so did God, but I also think if God created life in the Bible so that all his leaders were perfect, we would never feel able to be good enough for Him... If you look at every great MAN AND WOMAN, in the Bible, almost every single one of them blew it big time once. In my opinion, God knew when we read it today, as His word to us, HE was showing us we do have a sinful nature and that we do sin and even his faves did, so God doesn't play faves by who doesn't sin, but by who repents and CHANGES HIS WAYS And by the way, the baby from that mess died. And that in itself was such torture for David. I have 2 grown children, and if one of my babies died, I'm not sure I could go on, but I would with the help of God.

David was not a saint
But David was a man who was after the Lord's heart, Which means that even though he sinned, His love and devotion to the Lord was great
For David's sins his first born died within this affair

I think its comforting that God called David a 'man after his own heart', it makes me understand that God can use frail weak humans. Let's not forget that David repented, and God caused the baby to die in punishment of the sin. It's more a story to show us how fallen humans can be used by God. David didn't exactly 'get away' with his sin, but learnt from it.

David was mainly a good king, and faithful to God, but he was a human being and so was bound to make mistakes. Being a king, he no doubt got used to having his own way - he wanted Bathsheba so he made sure he got her (it isn't recorded what her feelings were in this!).

He did go through testing times and received punishment after this though, and eventually God shows that he was forgiven; Jesus was a direct descendant, born 'of David's line' many years later.

David sinned like all humans, but unlike many humans David also repented in sackcloth and ashes. God wants a contrite and a broken heart and he brings forth forgiveness and righteousness.

Jesus is now our sacrifice for forgiveness of sins and righteousness in all things.

I like the fact that the Bible records even the moral failures of Godly men. It teaches us something about them, and how God works. Of course, you have to read the rest of the story to get the whole picture.

Well that video of the Hoff being all drunk is a good demonstration. You have to have respect for your own life too.

It seems obvious. He has a lack of respect for human life because he orders someone to their death for his own personal benefit. (i.e. to save face)
