We just had a 1-day (actually 4-hour) trip to DC yesterday. We parked close to the Washington Monument and saw the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the White House (all within walking distance). If you have an entire day, you should see all the above and visit Arlington National Cemetary and see the changing of the gaurd. The Smithsonian is awesome, but you should plan your full day there.

The Washington Monument, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and the White House is on one end of the Mall downtown and the Capital building with the Supreme Court behind it on the other end. All along the Mall, a grassy area running down the middle, are art galleries, museums, including the Air and Space Museum, and the Smithsonian Institute. I don't see how you can beat that. I think the National Cathedral is great or the Mormon Temple although farther out by a half hour and the temple by maybe 45 minutes. Great Falls is an hour an a half if you prefer nature.

The coolest thing I did when I was there was see the Lincoln Memorial and the reflecting pool by the Washington Monument. You know, from that one scene in Forrest Gump. Also the Holocaust Museum was really interesting. And if you are going to be in DC during night, drive by all the monuments. They look so amazing lit up at night, especally the WWII Memorial.

You could spend all day in the Library of Congress. But definetely go on a tour and see all the monuments. Stop by the Supreme Court, walk up or down Capital Hill, and you can get everywhere by taking the Metro rail system underground. Buy an all day pass.

i remember going there on the 4th and hit a bunch of museums, one of the people are right, the space one isnt good. but make sure you see the gem one, sorry dont know the name but that one has the blue diamond, the biggest diamond in the world. that one is really great, that and the art one. if you get there really early you can do all the oustide stuff, then hit the museums and then on your way back see the arlington grave site with the tourch, that is where kennedy is burried and the flame never dies. try and not do the tours, they are really boring. places to eat, try the old post office, that place is pretty good and close to everything.
