They can have one milligram of benedryl per pound of weight. A twenty five pound dog can safely have one tablet of benedryl (the tablets are 25 milligrams). You can cut the tabs in half if you need to.

You can give them the benedryl up to three times a day. I would start with twice, but if the itching doesn't stop then tomorrow give them three doses.

Wendy,
First be certain it is the dye they are allergic to. It is odd (not saying it isnt true) just odd that BOTH of them have an allergy to the dye. I am a groomer, is it something the groomer might be grooming them with? or if you are bathing them are you certain that all of the shampoo is off of them after a rinse?? Adding a bit of olive oil to the dog food has helped many pets skin become less itcy and more shiny. This is my sisters trick! Her pets have beautiful coats thanks to the olive oil. Otherwise small small amounts of the benedryl are ok if it is a true allergy, to a bee sting etc. But if it is not it will stop them from itching only because benedryl slows the system down so much. I wont recommend a dosage because that is a bit risky without knowing their weight etc,but if you do give them any start out with such a small drop on a slice of bread or the likes. A drop that would come out of a medicine dropper. like a rain drop . then if that is tolerated try 2 rain drop sizes etc. There are dye free benedryls also becaue if you know for a fact it is a dye allergy dont use the colored benedryl. hope that helps!
Good luck!

Are they biting their legs and feet? Benedryl works for allergies, but how do you know they have them? They could be itching from fleas or mites or any other thing.

And a half of a baby aspirin will actually help with itching too. It doesn't treat allergies it just relieves pain or itching. Both are seen by the nervous system in similar ways, so aspirin will help with both.

you don't have to pay to CALL the vet and they can let you know how much by the weight of your dogs.
my shih-tzu takes a half a benedryl when he has a reaction but I'm not sure what the dosage is. i can't remember but it's what he's been taking for years now.
good luck.

Here is a site with the correct dosage, but if they were my dogs I would take them to the vet. There are shots the vet can give the dog for allergies, if that is the problem & they are inexpensise http://animalsunlimited.net/meds.htm

1 mg or 1 mL per pound of body weight. Regular Benedryl only, no extra strength or children's formula.

Good luck!

you need to call your vet and sparkling it with him first. maximum canines can wisely tolerate Benadryl, however the dosing and frequency of administration is diverse for individuals than that's for canines. And the dogs is going to ought to work out a vet besides to get a prognosis relating to what's inflicting the itching,
