one of the themes of christianity is the belief that jesus may return at any givin moment. the original apostles believed that he would return before they died. so, in a way, no there had never been a time since his death that christians didn't at least believe that jesus is on the verge of returning. now the definition of the end times related in revelation was written after jesus had been gone for some time, so there is a gap in there where that vision of it didn't exist.

Christian end times are now so wrapped in confusion that they will be joining the False Messiah and not even know it.
The Rapture theory and the second resurrection etc is all speculation that started in the 1800's .
