Scare tactic - They make people believe tap water has lethal crap like lead in it ( which it does, but in such miniscule amounts you'd die of old age before ever suffering from it ) and show that bottled water is pure, etc.
There was an Aquafina that was kinda funny. " Pure water, and more. " was the slogan, and get this: It's pure FLAVORED water. Okay, flavoring = not part of water, so how is it pure? They put chems ( of any kind ) into the water, it isn't pure. It's not pure, and more, because if there's more, the purity is gone, and it is therefore tainted. TAINTED, I SAY!

Some people think tap water is disgusting.... It normally depends on where they live. You should really drink tap water as much as you can opposed to bottled because I heard that you can get cancer from drinking too much bottled water. The plastic from inside the bottle gets into the water, so when you drink it you are drinking a very, very slight amount of plastic. It will not harm you unless you drink it for a very long time (many years). You can buy a filter for your faucet to purify your tap water and get the taste out of it.

People drink and buy bottled water for the reasons that when they're outside and they're thirsty, they'd want to drink that instead of sugar loaded sodas. It's not much of a fad than it is a necessity, and it makes you wonder why such a basic need is being turned into a consumerist item.
Other than that, there's the whole 'purified' and 'distilled' thing imprinted on it (I'm not sure if it makes a difference or if it's true) but the fact is, people tend to believe it because its there.

the problem with tap water is that it tastes bad in many locations, just depends on where you live and where the source of the water is
When I lived in Chicago I liked the tap water (from Lake Michigan), but where I now live we drink bottled.
Also the thin celebrities made it cool to carry around a bottle of water everywhere, so that affected the craze too
I agree that it is a total waste of money, but so is a lot of stuff we buy, isn't it??

its convenient and also Americans can be the fattest suckers when it comes to commercials and ads.
I think bottled water is a bad idea in the long run because it takes 1000 years for it to break down into Earth's soil, which means we are going to have an abundant supply of plastic bottles for a long time. Yes, unless people recycle... but they don't.

Often, tap what has a lot of impurities in it, such as high levels of chlorine, which are used in the cleaning process, which might explain why it's used. It also depends on what country you are in, and from. Not all countries' water supply is as clean as others, so bottled water is used.

wow, a lot of stuff in that question, but maybe people are just thirsty and the bottle makes it easier to carry then putting it in a glass that you get from home.
