Surely he should have dropped through the ice and sunk? The fact that he struggled to reach the pole because of all the ice is fairly interesting don't ya' think?

➔ Global Warming
To the people who have posted insulting answers - This is a loaded question, it is designed to encourage thought and enable me to get a feeling for other peoples views.
What for my concluding views at the close of this question before jumping in feet first!

Okay we have a few answers new...
Look at the facts here people, it is well known that Jeremy Clarkson does not beleive in Global Warming, thus the slant he gave was designed to match his views. Just as people who do believe in Global Warming only find evidence that backs them up. I have yet to find somebody who has an unbiased view and is willing to show both arguments for man-made and natural cycles.
I have seen the rim of the North Pole (Though not with my own eyes, though I would love to go!) and it is true that the caps are melting!
However does anybody know if this area was covered in ice 2,000 years ago? Are the caps melting and reforming over a few hundred year, almost like the tide moving in and out? Is it just a natural cycle that will see this area freeze again in a few hundred years time?
Should we be looking things from the human perspective of a hundred years or do we need to realise that the planet works on a much bigger timescale?

This is yet another case of how the media can infuence what we see! They can show us the plight of the polar bear in a nature documentry and then in the next breath show us how man can drive to the north pole.
Governments and media are experts at tricking us into beleiving their current agenda, regardless if it is true or not! People should research things for themselves and see the real truth!
Climate change has happend before and it will happen again, with or without humans on the planet! We should be saving natural habitats of endangered species instead of worrying about our added fractional percentage of Co2.

I suppose the simple answer is that it hasn't completely melted yet. But the number of square miles of ocean that are covered in ice now is definitely lower than the number 50 years ago. At the same time of year that is. Naturally there is much more ice in winter than summer. There is less Summer ice now than there was 50 years ago.

Bob and in the dark (very apt!) seem to be labouring under the delusion that there is total daylight in the Arctic in the winter! Sorry guys-just 180 degrees out I`m afraid.

I quit celebrating Xmas since 1975 and I lived in Alaska and went to the north pole and sorry to tell you, Santa is a hoax and it is a pagan holiday.

Because he's a dick!
Check the link below for information on the icecaps, if you're really interested, which I suspect you're not, but it's there anyway, so knock yourself out!
At least then you wont be driving anywhere....
--------Sorry - didn't mean to sound insulting!
It's just Clarkson is always doing things like this - for what reason, I don't know. The BBC keeps on paying him to do these mindless stunts, even though they must know that many people will be angered by his reckless behaviour. And, that's our taxpayers' money he's wasting to boot! Mutha_f****!

I watched it and loved the show however there is more to the Arctic than the small area around the North Pole.
I know Ben Saunders who actually walked there and he would disagree with your observations. Check out his websites, starting with the 2004 walk.

If you in any way doubt him, by all means go and look for yourself.

The Arctic ice cap is shrinking from the South up. And the difference is seen mostly in summer. Areas that had ice year round now melt in the summer.
So it's not surprising that he could drive on the upper part of it, especially if he did it in winter. But, in previous years, he could have started his journey farther South, especially in the summer.
Good article about it:

He came close to sinking.
Some areas looked as if the ice was really thin.
The route he took was strategically planned in order to avoid sinking.
