This must be the most-asked question in UK Answers Cat rs & Transportation section.

UK registration plates are reflective.
The front plate has black lettering on a white background, for the best possible clarity.
However, because the plate is reflective, it is considered a "light source" by UK legislation, and the same legislation does not allow a white light source other than reversing lamps to be visible from the rear of the car, so a white rear registration plate is illegal. A yellow background was chosen for the rear as black lettering on this is almost as clear to read as on a white background, but is legal.

Its so chavs know which end of the car to get in to drive it. In UK the only legal colours for vehicles registered after 1973 are white to front yellow to rear. Vehicles registered b4 '73 have choice of silver on black ground OR later plates , but not vice versa

They don't have to be different colours but the yellow plate can only be used at the rear. Plates can be black on white, silver on black or black on yellow. They were changed to these colours after the government did a study into the visibility of signs, I seem to remember it being moooted that europe would be adopting these colours accross the continent but that seems to have been forgotten about.

(a) So you can easily tell the front and back of a car at night when it's parked

(b) If you are following a car at night the reflection from a white number plate would be rather off-putting, hence they are yellow.

Hope that helps!

The difference allows the viewer (or camera) to tell which direction the car is travelling in or facing.

white for the front, and yellow for the back which is reflective so you can see it when your lights shine on it from behind.
