As soon as I read this Neurotitis came into my head as it sounds very much like it.

It's and inflammation of the nerves.

It is very painful and can ease of and come back with a vengence, especially after physio as they work on muscles contected and controlled by nerves.

It' s fairly rare condtion so Doctor's don't often look for it. They tend to all go for the simple answers first and elliminate them.

Go back to your Doctor ASAP and ask him to consider neurotitis, he will chuck a hissy fit if you tell him it was from Yahoo and a nurse! So just say you were doing some research and he has these syptoms. What does he think? If you let them 'believe' they solved a problem they will do something about it.

I can go and look up more about the condition if you would like I have have nothing too much in my head without going and looking up all the syptoma and treatments. But I do know that it sounds like your dad has something very similar as I have studied it.
Just e-mail me if you want more info.

could be a pinched nerve is his shoulder, it can run down the arm and cause pain in the hands, and neck, tell him to ask the doc about that, a surgical procedure might have to be used

Possibly a slipped disc in the neck or back....Normally if you get a slipped disc it goes in one direction (cant remember exactly which way right now...) if it goes the oppisite way than normal it can cause the symptons your dad is having. My mother had this happen to her and she had to have surgery

Have your father see a chiropractor or acupuncturist, these modalities can help stop the problem when all else has failed.
