I view this as being just another way of stating the Witches Rede, "What you put out comes back to you, times three". It means if you put out bad intent then you can expect to RECIEVE bad intent from others, If you put out GOOD things then likewise, you can expect to recieve GOOD things. In other words, Treat folks, the way YOU would like to be treated and chances are that you will be. (((Rae)))

It's a good code as far as it goes.

But you have to take it further and say, do unto others what they would prefer, if you can. Not everybody likes the same things. What you consider a kindness, someone else might see as an insult.

Even though I can't bring myself to comply, I know I'm being cruel when I don't beat a masochist. I use that example because I have an acquaintance who's a porn star. She has a belly punch fetish and has developed an incredibly developed set of abs and learned how to control them in order to cater to that trade. It turns her on to be punched in the stomach. But I don't think I could do it.

It means what it says and says what it means. No disrespect, but I find it hard to believe you are a real New York cop reading your questions and answers. They do not represent what I thought a well educated well informed peace officer should be.

If we want to be treated with respect we should respect others. It is really just that simple.

It's not a bad rule in most situations, but it has faults - it assumes that your own wants are a good indicator of the wants of others. I wouldn't want a masochist or a suicidal would-be martyr to apply this rule to me.

The September 11 outrage is a dramatic example of a failure of the "Golden Rule". The hijackers demanded no more (death) from their victims than they demanded of themselves. This IN NO WAY justifies their actions.

It means to show someone the respect that you would want to be shown in return. Unfortunately, very few seem to live by this Golden Rule these days.

Do what you believe is right to do, because, really, what amount of convenience or comfort can make up for knowing yourself to be a turd of a person?
