Comment ca va? Literally means 'how goes it? It's shortened to 'Ca va?' - a simple 'Ca va' can also be the response ('goes well') but you may want to go for the sentence... 'Oui, ca va bien merci.' ...'Yes, it goes well thank you.'

The formal way to ask "How are you?" is "Comment allez-vous?"(or " Comment vas-tu?" to somebody you are familiar with, like a friend or a relative)
To which the formal answer is "Je vais bien, merci et vous?"
but the familiar one will be simply "Ça va bien, merci"
But colloquially, when coming across someone they know, people now simply ask "Ça va ?" and people will answer "Oui, ça va, merci", both of which are faster.
Basically it is "Are things going well for you?""Yes, everything is going fine, thanks"/"How are you doing?" "I am doing fine".

PS. In writing you need a cedilla under the c to show it is an s sound and not a k sound.

Ca va literally translates as "It goes" but is understood to mean "How goes it?" and in practice I usually say "Ca va bien?" which means "Everything OK?"

The translation is "that goes?" It's like saying "how's it going?" in English.

Va is "aller"--to go.
