well, you could look at the persuasions of the Catholic Church and the Church of England...
Like how they used to issue "pardons from sin" for people who left all their money to the church when they died.

And the Salem witch trials are another good example of how religion can go totally bad...

And don't forget the Westboro Baptist Church (google it).

Oh and then there was Waco Texas and the Jonestown Massacre.

Currently, the Chinese government has been trying to overthrow traditional Buddhism in Tibet and replace it with their own version of Buddhism which is just mind control.

The list goes on and on...

Oh, and you simply MUST include the attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11.... that act of terrorism will always be equated with the Islamic radicals.

That's pretty funny... as religion claims to outline the nature of humanity, and therefore it is somehow responsibly for humanities actions. It wasnt religion that caused evil, but rather human's who abused the messages of religion. Sorry to confuse you more. Perhaps discuss how religion became a social power and as a power it allowed humans to abuse the trust of the followers. Religion reached into individuals biggest emotions of the time such as fear, and seemed to provide answers where none existed - and therefore was a powerful force of control.

All I know is that, although there are some universal evils, there would be far fewer of them without religion. Many evils are created by religions and the people that believe in them.

Sounds like a hard sell. Do you really mean to say that if there were not commandments against, murder and theft for example, that there would be less of it? Do you really mean to say that "love your neighbor as yourself" is a source of evil in the world?

Who chose the topic, you or your teacher? If you get to choose, I would choose something else.

No - In my studies / travels / exploration I have found many loving and generous people who are religious. Being religious does not mean they are automatically evil (bad). It so depends on whether their life is guided by their book and ways or straight-jacketed by it.
