YES! By law, all person's traveling into a foreign country must now have a passport of their own. Your son is eligable for a command sponser passport, but all that will allow him to do is to travel between Japan and CONUS (the US) for visits and to move. I would suggest getting him a regular passport from the Phillapines as well as you will need it to travel back to visit.

He does need one. We headed overseas last time with a newborn.. had to wait on her passport!
Anyway... it may take quite a while, I'm sad to say. With the new passport requirements for travel to and from Cananda and Mexico, the passport offices have been overrun, and I have heard of it taking at least 6 months. And even expiditing it, can still take 2 months. If you do choose to expidite, that cost will not be covered by the military... it will be out of pocket.
Also, it is a pain when the sponsor is in one place and the child another. Make sure you get things notarized and that you have all of the appropriate powers of attorney for your family back in the Phillippines.
I certainly hope that it goes much quicker, but as we all know, it's better to plan for the worst!

absolutely. If he is a US citizen, he needs a No Fee one for Japan, and a tourist one to travel outside of japan anywhere but the US.

If he is not a US citizen, he needs a passport from his country of origin with a Command Sponsored visa.

Yes, he will need a passport.

Check with your personnel section and ID Card/Passport section for further details. They will have the forms necessary, and can USUALLY get an official passport turned around really quick.

Good luck

There are bad people out there. The world is a different place now. The parents need to prove who he is. If you are American you can not go back to America with out one. My buddy is going though that right now and his child is unborn(soon will be). Do the paper work for his sake, in the long run it will be better for him.
