Dude your rambling on, but point being, humans are always looking for that sense of being in the universe, whether or not they believe in something, they will make it up for peace of mind! It's just a natural thing, it has nothing to do with "Stupidity" its a natural psychological response to Chaos.

For starters: Despite so many people convinced otherwise, "Atheist" and "non-religious" are two fundamentally different concepts.
In a totally atheistic world, one major world religion would still survive, because Buddhism does not require theistic beliefs.
Beyond that: Admittedly, organized religion - monotheistic in particular - has not proven entirely advantageous to the history of mankind, but it does have its benefits. Religion is what helps the masses maintain some semblance of morality in world that is going right down the drain because it's run by the irrelegious, amoral Almighty Dollar and its puppets; religion is the only thing that tells John Q Public, who is far from being the strong personality to develop a sense of morality from his own being alone, to care about anyone but himself.
The fact that major religions as well as fringe cults have been - in many cases for centuries - subverted at the highest levels by amoral and at their core irreligious people does not negate their theoretical value; it does, however, leave the world in shambles as the "Christian right" clashes with "Islamic fundamentalists" on an equal footing of serving not their alleged belief, but the Almighty Dollar first and foremost.

It has nothing to do with being stupid. It has everything to do with being ignorant and afraid of bigger things.
People need to know everything will be OK. they fear what they don't know and understand - death, nature....
I think in many things believers have things easier. Decision making is certainly easier (God said...) so is the acceptance of the death of loved ones (they're in heaven ....) and the acceptance of bad things (it's god's will...).
Religion helps people cope with life - the problem arises when they don't accept any other point of view and they turn fanatics.
All in all religion has much more bad points than good ones but only because of the leaders who use it as a mean to keep people under their control.

Aloha Richard,
Great question. You would like reading Dostoyevsky....
So long as man remains free, he strives for nothing so incessantly and so painfully as to find someone to worship. But man seeks to worship what is established beyond dispute, so that all men would agree at once to worship it. For these pitiful creatures are concerned not only to find what one or the other can worship, but to find something that all would believe in and worship; what is essential is that all may be together in it. This craving for community of worship is the chief misery of every man individually and of all humanity from the beginning of time. For the sake of common worship, they've slain each other with the sword. They have set up gods and challenged one another, "Put away your gods and come and worship ours, or we will kill you and your gods!" And so it will be to the end of the world, even when gods disappear from the earth; they will fall down before idols just the same.
— Fyodor Dostoyevsky; (1821-1881); Russian novelist, The Brothers Karamazov (1880)

That's how all superstition and religions started out.
Human beings are creatures that needed stability to grow.
However, facing diasters and random events frightens them, hence, they formulate a being that is responsible, so that their fears could be more "predictable"
Even now, currently, there are many people who still believe in cults or maybe even sacrifice.
These are still educated people, but weak minded.
They are easily influenced/bribed/bluffed.
And there are always people who will be trying to con there people of their riches.
Personally, i believed that all organized religion is a farce and look what they did to the world.

I'd like to think we're getting somewhere, but it will be a long time before religion disappears. It actually seems to be a deeper than conscious aberration of the human organism, like cancer.

WHY would you think an Atheist president would ban religion?
I'm an Atheist and can't think of anything more stupid. I say let the clowns believe in what they want - it keeps them more pliable. They're easier to control if they believe in an invisible super being who reputedly says: Suck up to me baby or go to hell.
Your constitution protects allows you freedom Of and From religion although most USians being in the majority would love to somehow ban Atheists from having any rights at all.
There are at least 8 states that have laws banning Atheists from public office.

Most likely, yes. Some humans cannot face life without thinking there is something more to it, some greater plan or what not, so hence we have religion. Its like the supports that keep a weak house from falling in on itself.

Our ancestors needed religion to explain all the things they could not, now that we can god is no longer nessecary.god unfortunately will never go away it has been spread by force to the point where you at least publicly believed or you died. And by died I mean is some of the most barbaric horrible means the human mind has ever dreamt of.

The fact that people believe doesn't annoy me (well actually it does) but it's more the fact that the organized religions interfere in politics and day to day life.
