I've often wondered this myself. They do seem to be fixated on the subject don't they? Great question.

As an atheist I feel obliged to point out that I believe in religions. There is overwhelming evidence for their existence.
I don't believe in gods.

Religion is behind 911. Religion was behind the Spanish Inquisition. Religion is behind the insurgency in Iraq. Religion is suppressing science in america and is endangering America's position as the worlds leader in technology. Religion is the driving force behind more wars, deaths, and murders than any other single cause.
The old testament is full of the reitousness of slavery, selling your daughter into slavery as a prostitute, executing children for disrespecting their fathers, executing fathers for collecting firewood on the sabbath for their family, the subjugation of women to their male counterparts, and hundreds of other moral travesties.
Thousands of reasons that we "evil" atheists find folly in religious propagation.

Because we don't want delusional people writing the laws and making decisions that shape the world we live in. Those who believe in the importance of truth and who have the intellectual capacity to think rationally, with logic and reason have a moral obligation to society to make the truth known.

Because religion, particulary christianity, is all about hypocrisy, ignorance, misquotes, scientific illiteracy, lies, manipulation, abuse and self serving greed, and the atheists along with the rest fo the informed world are sick and tired of the religious, particularly christian threat to peace on Earth..
Therefore, we are fighting for our childrens future and their right to live in a healthy environment, and allow them the right to stand on the shoulders of the intellectual giants before them..
This means exposing people like yourself for the ill informed charlatans you and your ilk so very clearly are..!
That's why..!!

I can't speak for a group as large as atheists any more than you can speak for a group the size of the one to which you belong. I can speak for myself. I am not obsessed. I am interested as to why groups of people as large as the groups represented on this forum can believe in what I consider to be fairy tales.

It's simple:
Although the existence of God doesn't matter, the irrational beliefs of humans DO.
...
Why are beliefs dangerous?
Beliefs lead to actions. Irrational beliefs lead to irrational and often dangerous actions.

I don't think you can be obsessed with something you don't believe in but atheists are intelligent enough to recognise that religion is dangerous and/or impinges on human rights so we would prefer to reduce the threat of danger in our lives.
