one of my dogs sometimes shows unhappiness when we touch his paws. But we don't mean to hurt him, just sometimes want to pet his big fur paws. Why? Any thoughts?

It's the trait of a fearful submissive dog. It is a genetic personality component. These dogs grow up to be more timid, tail between the legs, fearful dogs. They can nip in fear, but will never out and out attack a passerby on the street.
Dominant dogs walk with their tails straight up in the air. Watch puppies. The dominant ones will tower over the submissive ones. It's genetic. You can see it from about 4 weeks of age on into adulthood.
I always tell people temperament is genetic. It really is.

I have always had dogs throughout my life, and have always done my own grooming & nail trimming for my dogs or cats.
I have on occasion, accidently cut the quicks of their nails before(where it will bleed), and have noticed since then with either my dogs or cats, that they will tend to dislike their paws being bothered. if you take your pets to a groomer, they aren't perfect and may cut a quick too far, and you will notice that your dog/cat won't like their paw's being bothered. Or, if this is a new and sudden thing that you have noticed, it could be this, or it could be that your dog has something stuck in his paw, like a sliver of glass, or a thorn....this will definetley make them not wanting you to bother their feet. Check his/her feet out(like you would your own) and see if there maybe something in there.

It just comes with their personality and experiences, our corgi hates his feet being touched because one time the groomer cut his nails way to short, my only advice is to start when the dog is young, and touch and rub their feet so their used to it, it could also be that he has allergies and that makes it tickle, if that's it try a very small amount of benydryl, though it will make them drowsy

It may not seem like it, but your dog is setting boundaries. This not something you really want to tolerate though, because today he won't let you touch them, later you won't be allowed to trim his nails, soon you won't be allowed to brush him, and it goes on.

You want to impress on your dog he must allow you to touch his body wherever you want to. Teaching your dog to tolerate any touch will help in other areas too, such as when you go to the vet or the groomers.

The trick to teaching your dog to allow you to touch his feet is simply to do it often and under relaxing conditions. I make it a point to touch and manhandle all of my dogs from the moment they become a part of my family. Its very important for social skills.

I have a lab/beagle mix, and I'm the only one he will let touch his legs/paws. He actually falls asleep if I massage them! But if anyone else touches them, he gets fidgety. It might be an issue of trust.

Again, I have to agree 1000% with luvtorofl. And while I am at it, make sure you can touch any part of your dog, anytime you want, regardless of what the dog thinks. It will be a cold day in hell when one of my dogs protests about me touching anythning on their bodies.

My dog does it too,I think it tickles them, the fur is all the way in their little crevices and if you'll try to touch his hairs on his feet when he's asleep,he wakes up abruptly shaking his foot hard..I seriously believe it tickles. I hate to be tickled do you?
