You should talk to your doctor about this to make sure it is not a symptom of something. That said, many people have trouble getting to sleep.
The three methods that work best for me are:
1. Drink a glass of warm milk. Flavor it with sugar or vanilla if you like. Warmed milk has natural tryptophan, which causes drowsiness (it's also in turkey).
2. Drink chamomile tea. It is very relaxing and calming. there is a Celestial Seasonings brand tea called "Sleepytime Tea" which works well. However, if you are allergic to ragweed, don't use this option. Chamomile is related to ragweed.
3. Deep breathing techniques can do wonders in relaxing yourself to sleep.
Sweet dreams.

Whenever I experience sleeplessness, I curl up in bed with a book...not nessecarily a very intersting book, though. Try a book you've already read and know the outcome. Your mind will get weary and with any luck, sleep will soon follow. Works for me most every time; unless stress is the reason for insomnia. Then, I just do my best to clear my head, lay in the quiet darkness, and think of things not-very-important (trying not to concentrate on whatever it is stressing me out.) I just tell myself that I will worry with it in the morning.
Take a deep breath, close your eyes. As you slowly exhale, relax every mucsle in your body, from your toes to your head. Become completely limp, and sink into the softness of your bed. Clear your mind. Perhaps have soft, slow music playing quietly to help you drift off to sleep...

Hmmmmmm sounds like a big problem which most of us face because of our busy life schedules. Here are some suggestions that u can try and i hope they will work in ur case as well as they have help me. U can try taking a bath before retiring to bed, this will relax u to sleep, drink warm milk before going to bed as this can help in having a sound sleep (make sure u dont take coffee or tea or alcohol before going to bed). and yes try listening to some good music while u slip in the bed preferably instrumental as they will give u a very soothing effect. Another tried and tested formula is to count 1 to 100 in reverse order.
If u follow these i m sure u will get rid of ur problem. good luck!

If you don't have an idea what causes good sleep, there is no use describing it to you now. It means that you have not come of age. Spend sleepless nights away from home, then come home and sleep to your heart's content.

Do you mean without a prescription sleeping pill? Or anything, including herbal or OTC pills?
Anything with doxylamine in it works a treat. It is an antihistimine that causes drowsiness and sleep. You buy it over the counter, here it is under the brand name Dozile.

I went into one of the New Age book stores that drive me insane and got something called the Delta Sleep System. Before I could start complaining how stupid it was I was out. It's ambient noise, not like whales or rain. And you play it kind of loud.

What works for me is reading in bed while laying on my side. If I don't read, random thoughts just never stop and I lay awake for hours. If I read, my mind is focused on only one thing. When I get sleepy enough, I put down the book, turn off the light, roll over, and I'm gone. Try it, it might work for you, too.
Good luck!

Try drinking a warm glass of milk. Sounds childish, i know, but it's supposed to have something in it (i forget what it's called) that makes you sleepy.

Dont sleep for a night, and then go to sleep the next day at the time you want to go to sleep... make sure you wake up early the next day, maybe even earlier so you can make sure you will be sleepy for the night.
