They have a self defensive force.

Japan Self-Defense Forces

The Japan Self-Defense Forces (自衛隊, Jieitai?), or JSDF, are the military forces in Japan that were established after the end of World War II. The force has not been engaged in real combat but has been engaged in some international peacekeeping operations.[1] Recent tensions, particularly with North Korea[2] and China,[3] have reignited the debate over the status of the SDF and its relation to society.[4]

The JSDF numbered 239,430 in 2005 with 147,737 in the Ground Self-Defense Force, 44,327 in the Maritime Self-Defense Force, 45,517 in the Air Self-Defense Force, and 1,849 in the Joint Staff Office. Reserves numbered 57,899.[5]

I can't believe some of the idiots on here?! Must be part of that 29% who still believe Bush is a great president? We are training the insurgents who fight against us. We are training our own killers. The Iraqi military will never "stand up" so that we can stand down, because the Iraqi military is filled with different religious sects who have no intention of supporting this U.S. created government. In previous wars, it was considered treason to make a profit on the war effort, now, the republicans who still support Bush, believe it's fashionable to make billions off the blood of our soldiers. This is war profiteering at the expense of the American taxpayer, and our soldiers, and some of you are gullible enough to blame liberals, or the media?! Need I remind you that the Republicans voted down the Leahy amendment which would've outlawed war profiteering? Wake up get a fricking life and learn something about what this administration is doing to our nation!! From a patriot and proud veteran

It's called the Japanese Self Defence Force.
Under which you have the JSDF Air Force, Navy, & Army.
Their constitution (that the Allies after WWII helped them write) only allow them provisions for a Defence Force and no offensive power. The latest Japanese President has made statements to the Diet (their congress) about rewriting the constitution, if they did we might possibly see a change in their military posture. No worries for us, they are good allies now.

Yes they do..the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force. The military in Japan is considerably smaller than the US and is for defensie purposes (part of thier surrender agreement from WW2).

I spent a few years in Asia and the Japanese are some of out best allies. Its funny to see how well the hold Americans in Japan i was curios one day and asked one of the Japanese troops i was serving with in the cleanup after the tsunami in Indonesia and he said the Japanese Army considered WW2 an honorable fight and a good fight so the Japanese felt they had nothing to be ashamed of and i agreed and we go on with the business at hand. They are a capable force with a real file for defenses but with North Korea getting over zealous lately (trust me were closer to a war in Korean then you would want to know) they will prove to be a swift ally.

Japan has a small "self-defense force" that is regulated by the US on how big it can be. I have worked with them before.
