Yes, to an extent.
What most ballistic vests do is convert the kinetic force of the bullet into a broader impact force, that is spread out across the vest, rather than being concentrated in a fraction of an inch of metal. That's why people who get shot while wearing a vest still get bruises, and possibly even broken ribs.
The vest would protect against a punch the same way -- spreading out the total impact force. It would also absorb a small amount of that force, depending on the vest materials.
Because a punch has so much less total force than a bullet, the small amount absorbed and the distribution, would have a proportionally bigger benefit against a punch.

The two guys above me made excellent points. I use to wear a vest while I was in the military. We would always punch each other horsing around. It did stop the impact of the punch and didn't hurt too much. The funny thing about vests is that it will stop a bullet but not a knife. A knife can penetrate the vest and do extreme damages to the vital system. Our lieutenant would walk around punching people in the chest to ensure you were wearing you vest. I call it hazing but oh well, just wear your vest.
Coregraph and Sicktop 80 is who I was refering to

NO way Jose! Most bullet resistant vests,
note I say "resistant" because there is no "bullet proof" vest. It depends on the calibre and the powder charge and the distance you are from the bullet. Armour piercing rounds for eg can pierce bullet resistant body armour. Most are made from Kevlar but there are newer materials now. A well trained attacker won't punch you in the chest simply because there are many other more deadly targets of opportunity which I shall not mention because I do not want to incite violence in any way. Take care.

Brings back an old memory. More years ago than I want to count I got called to a bar fight at a local biker bar. these guys always had knives. I shoved my "trauma plate" into the vest's front pocket. At that time, they were a curved metal plate designed to stop rifle rounds. Heavy as hell, but they would stop a knife. I went into the bar with several officers. One bruiser was trying to get away from two other officers. He must have been about 6'4" and a good 280 pounds. He got one arm loose and slammed a round house punch into my chest. I barely felt the blow although it did stagger me back a couple steps. However, punching that trauma plate busted the hell out of his hand. He was much easier to handle after that.

Most not all vests will protect against slashing but a small pointed object such as an icepick can get between the weave and possibly get through.Alot depends on vest quality.

No, nor would it protect you from a knife. And no vests are bulletproof. That is a myth. Body armor is designed to stop certain levels of ballistics, such as bullets. Different armor can stop different types of bullets...most of the time.
There is body armor you can purchase for correctional use that does help with knives and physical blows such as punches.

A standard Aramid or Kevlar vest would perhaps soften the blow and dissipate some of the force. I have been kicked in the ribs with my vest on, and it still knocked the wind out of me. The newer boron carbide plate vests like the military uses would break the hand of whoever hit you, but you would still feel it.

you would feel it but more than likely they won't leave a mark on you. bull riders use versions of bp vests to protect against being kicked by bulls/horses. granted they have more power behind them... you feel it but are more protected than just wearing a shirt and being punched
now being stabbed is another story. only certain vests will protect agaisnt that. they aren't designed to stop piercing objects like that all the time.
