The Canon proprietory CR2 RAW files seem only to be compatible with Photoshop 7 if converted to TIFF. I wish to be able to convert them to standard RAW files which can then be stored and be compatible with any software in the future. Is the only way to purchase Lightroom and CR3? I can't afford that lot!

I can't see how to edit these questions. I did of course mean Photoshop CS3.

I have just tried the Camera Raw plugin with PS7 and it tells me that it is not compatible with this version of Photoshop

My last answer suggests saving as Photoshop files. This makes sense, but to do this in PS7, it has to be converted to a TIFF first. Is there no way of avoiding this extra step?

There is no standard RAW file for camera makers or software. If you shoot raw, then save as photoshop file (.psd) for all your working files. This is the best file format for working in photoshop - it's adobe's native format.

The process of opening files in CS3 will take files through adobe camera raw which is part of CS3.

I have to pretty much echo Ace's answer. If you properly downloaded the Canon software, there should be no problem. I am thinking that somewhere along the way you did NOT get the Canon RAW converter properly installed. Perhaps a box not checked or it may be on a CD you did not think you needed. I'm just throwing out ideas. If you KNOW you have RAW converter software installed, I can only suggest you call tech support and talk with them. I have spoken with them in the past on other matters and always found them courteous and helpful. Oh... forget trying to use GIMP or any such freebe Photoshop wanna be. You need a proper RAW conversion program. I use Phase One Capture One. However, you should be able to use your Canon software at least to get started. In the future you may very well want to use a better program than the Canon supplied software. steve
