My cat has developed a very large ulcer on the stump of its amputated back leg. I took it to the vet and he charged me over $300 to tell me to leave it open, and wash it with salt water. He gave some antibiotics as well, which didnt work. the whole visit was only 15mins. I cant afford another $300 to take her back.. Someone said that Valium will make it go to sleep and not wake up...Is this true...or what other method might work, other than shooting it.

I think the pound would put her to sleep for free, don't shoot her

I am so sorry to hear about your cat. I wouldn't try Valium as it might cause a seizure and shooting would hurt this poor cat even more. If there is a humane society near bye or a shelter. Please call them and ask what they charge for this cat to be Euthanized. Your cat won't feel anything while it's being put down. It is the most humane way to let go of a pet. I really hope this advice helps you out some.

Don't kill her.I'll give you a home remedy that just may work.Cover the ulcer with honey ( yes,it's antibacterial) and wrap it with gauze.Change it every other day.Wash it with Betadine solution between changes. It's amazing how well this works.Just try it before you do anything drastic, but if it comes down to it,you should be able to have her euthanized at a local animal shelter.Don't believe the Valium thing.Valium is a very safe drug and it would take a LOT of it to kill a cat.

Wow ... what a tough situation -- you don't mention how old your sick kitty is. But, why don't you quickly call your local humane society, who will either:

1. Help you out financially for your cat's' vet bills.
2. Give you the name of a vet more sympathetic and who might heal your cat at a VERY REDUCED Rate.

In the meantime, gently washing the ucer with hot salt water is a good thing to try to keep the ulcer from getting an infection so it doesn't close up and fester.

If this is a fixable problem then do your cat a favour and hand it over to an adoption group so it can go to a new home. Special needs cats can often be found new homes with sympathetic people very easily. Do not kill the cat yourself, you are more likely to put the cat through even more pain unnecessarily...if it comes to that then get the vet to put the cat to sleep humanely - it is not very expensive. You owe it to your cat to do the responsible thing here.

Ya it costs like $10.00 or a little more to put
an animal to sleep... just take your animal back
and have it done the right way... It's quick and
they go right to sleep... don't do anything cruel..
your pet has sufferd enough..
Btw... I'm sorry about what is happening to your
cat... I just lost my kitty and had to have her put to
sleep.. I watched the whole thing... trust me
it's the right thing to do if you can't afford any
more pet bills...

Why don't you do the cat a favor and sign it over to the animal shelter. Tell them it was a stray if it satisfies your conscience. If you can't afford proper vet care, then please don't get another pet. Your cats condition is not a death sentence, it is just inconvenient for you. Find a shelter or rescue organization that will relieve you of the burden, don't kill the poor cat.

My Cat had to be put down. It was the most trumatic thing he had to go through! He was diagnodes with CHF. They told me that there was no way to fix him. He lived a long GREAT life. He was very spoiled for a long 17 years. When they put him down it hurt him. The shot hurt and he faught it. It was HORRIBLE! I would NOT want to go out like that. I would rather have a bullet to my head, or go to sleep and never wake up. He suffered. I saw it in his eyes. He looked at me with those eyes, like, "What are you doing to me?" I am an animal person and I think that you need to find the fastest way outfor him/her. Talk to your vet. BUT if you cant afford an animal, then you should not have one. They are like family, have him/her taken care of. If you are having a hard time paying for it there are vets that will work with payments. I really hope that you dont put her down for something like an ulcer. Maybe you can find someone to rescue her. But dont kill her!!

I am so sorry to hear about your cat. Call the vet and explain your problem and remind him that his advice and medication did nothing to help your cat. Tell him that you really can not afford another large vet bill and see if he will put your cat to sleep. If you get no results then you should call your local shelter and ask them to help you. Good Luck and God Bless you and your poor kitty.

Well that was a rip-off. You may just go to an animal shelter, I'm sure they put numerous animals to sleep as the previous person said.
