In Pranayamam Apan -Vayu relieves us of weakness and disease.

The two types of Vayus namely Pran and Apan are constantly flowing in our body. The one pervades the region from the throat to the heart and the other expands to the outer regions of air. Pran-Vayu gives us strength, health and zest and Apan -Vayu relieves us of weakness and disease.

The practice of Pranayam is divided into three parts :

Rechak (Exhalation)
Purak (Inhalation)
Kumbhak ( Retention of the breath ).
Retention of breath within is called internal Kumbhak and after exhaling and holding it externally is external Kumbhak.

A similar definition of Pranayam is also found in Bhagwat Gita.

Merging of Apan into Pran ( Inhalation )
Merging of Pran into Apan (Exhalation)
Stopping the flow of Pran and Apan ( Retention of breath effortlessly). -

It is a mudra and to attain this mudra one has to sit straight either cross-legged as in Sukh Asan or sit in a chair. Keep ur elbows to ur side and ur hands on ur knees. Now touch the tip of index finger to the bottom of thumb and join the tip of middle and ring finger with tip of thumb. Keep the little finger straight. This u ve to do on both hands and then just observe ur breathing. Do it at least for 15 minutes in a day. Its benefits - it takes out excess wind from ur stomach and prevents heart attack. If a person feels heart attack is coming this mudra will prevent it as a first aid.
