Somebody says "treaty". But there is no such signed treaty which banned holding military of Japan (if you say there is a treaty, please show the exact clause).

However in the Japanese constitution, there is a clause which renounce war (not renounce military).
-----
[original is in Japanese]
Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.

In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.
-----

"renounce war and the threat or use of force". According to this clause, Japan haven't hold a military (but not banned). However, since self-defense is necessary for any country, Japan hold Self-Defense Forces.
But they can't launch a preemptive strike against other nations according to the constitution.
That is why Japan can't and didn't dispatch military and troops when the US troops was in battle in the Mid-East.

Does Japan Have A Military

Not very likely to happen. Japan's constitution, wrote after WWII, prohibits Japan's military from going any where outside of Japan. Our presence there is a security blanket for them. If we pulled out the economy on Okinawa would collapse. U.S troops, family members, and civilian contract jobs pump billions into the economy of just that one island.

After WWII Japan was not allowed to have a military with an offensive force. They are only allowed to have a defensive force, thus the name Japan Self Defense Force.

There's no treaty, their constitution states that they may only have a self defense capability. Remember the Allies helped write that constitution for the safety of the region.

They do have a military, it's just they weren't allowed to have strong offensive weapons and vehicles. However, there was practically no limitation to building up a defensive military. In fact, anyone attacking Japan would get a swift and strong response.

Right now, they're going through a democratic process to reverse that in the wake of the military threat from North Korea. Some in their government are using that as an excuse to build up a more offensive-capable military to "prevent" an attack. Right now, they only have the means to "respond".

wrong, wrong, wrong.

Japan is allowed to have a military, with no restrictions and they most certainly have a military. They are participating in the war on terror, just not a fighting role. One of the reasons Japan entered WW2 was because of restrictions put on them by the west. After Japan was defeated by the US, they were a shattered nation that needed the US military to stay there to help in the rebuilding and for protection against the Soviets and then also communist China. The people of Japan, being who they are, have felt alot of shame for their role in WW2 and because of this they had made the decision to only build a military strictly for defence, not for attacking. The Japanese didn't even have much to do with peace-keeping in the last century and it was contravercial for them(in their country) to participate in the war on terror, even if it is a non-combat role. ie: field hospitals, engineers

They have a huge highly effective military that includes many of the worlds best weapon systems. It is not supposed to use over 1% of the GNP, if I remember correctly, and only be a self-defense force.

Japan does have a military, but its very limited in scope and ability with our treaty after WWII governing what they can and can not have. They can defend themselves to a small extent but do not have weapons \ transport systems to leave their immediate theater.

They have a homeland security force, similar to a national police force. But it is limited to internal defense only -- they are not allowed to even plan or train for any offensive actions.
