...just curious. It seems that more often then not, things have a way of either dragging on for a very long time, or the occupying power leaves. I have one example:
The Indian Wars in the west. We did win that one, and I would classify it as a prolonged guerilla conflict. Can you come up with some others?

I agree with the ones above but I have to add the Federal occupation of the south after the war between the states. Lasted nearly 20 years plus the wartime occupation of Missouri. The Spanish conquest of Central America. The English over the Boers of South Africa.

We came close in VietNam. TET 68 was a last ditch offensive as we know now, but as you stated we left.

I believe the Korean conflict is still in a state of cease fire.

The Vikings did well gaining Normandy and Russia. In Russia they had to put up with the Great Khan until they refused to continue to pay tribute. Not sure those count under your guidelines though.
