I remember that quote and I've seen it used before by anti-LDS, so I looked it up:
It was a 1945 quote in an LDS-affiliated magazine, not by anyone in a leadership position in the church. The church sent a lengthy letter later that year to anyone inquiring about it why that statement was nowhere close to church doctrine.

You can read the whole thing below, as well as the response by the church.

Yes Brother we do still think. In fact the best way to know with a surity that what the Prophet says is true, is to ponder it in your heart and mind. Then ask God if those things are true and if they are He will send the Spirit to testify of it.
I don't put those steps into practice all of the time but I have before and I've recieved my answers.

Obviously whoever said that didn't mean it literally, because how would I absorb what the prophet said if I didn't think about it?

I did a search for that in lds.org.... couldn't find anything, so it mustn't be a very major "doctrine".

Care to send me a link?

Added: Here's a link which IS doctrine, encouraging LDS to learn and think about everything....

I was trying to find the article that says we shouldn't just take what our leaders say on blind faith, but pray and ask to know for ourselves if what they are saying is true.... in every instance. Couldn't find that one, though (but it also is doctrine).

I think, therefore, I believe.

EVERY prophet from Joseph Smith to Gordon Hinckley has said, if you don't believe me, ask God.

you can ask this question of any religion, science nitch, antireligious person. So few think past what they have been told. Are you one of those types?
