I've just never had much interest in a relationship, I like being on my own. Fortunately we don't need to get married & have children for financial security or old age anymore.
I also know a few people who have a relationship and aren't getting married; they just think marriage is an outdated institution, don't want to follow the rules. They have been together for many years and -to the best of my knowledge- are true to another, but they just don't feel the official ceremony is necessary in their lives.

Some people simply never get married, well, because life is simple when it does not involve sex and they have other purposes to fulfill.
As far as legacy is concerned, not everyone cares, and for those who do they may have an outstanding life as it is, and do not need a spouse and children to round out their lifes accomplishments and legacy. They may even have a brother or two that carry the family name so they feel they don't have to.
Or, maybe they simply can enjoy a long time not being married, then marry later in life because people live a long time these days on average. Typically, people who live fast (do everything quick and young) die younger than normal from what I have witnessed. Some people like to take their time and smell the roses.
Also, many people from what i have witnessed do not understand or respect marriage, and would end up divorced anyways. They are either confused or just have other plans.

Marriage is absolutely meaningless in today's "no-fault", divorce-happy society.
It is the only "contract" where one of the parties may defile the terms of the contract and yet still benefit by law.
Many men are refusing to marry because it is a lose/lose situation; women are having an increasingly difficult time finding men who are not aware that there is nothing to gain from marriage.

Because that is not all there is to life. Some would rather have a career without the distraction of marriage and kids. I myself love my hubby and kids, but marriage and children aren't everyone choice. Nothing wrong or weird about it. It's all a choice.

Family history, serious mental illnesses (IE personality disorders, addictions, etc.), health issues, not finding the right person... too many reasons to list. My husband was 54years old when we married, and I am his first and only wife. He has no children. For him, it was a decision in early adulthood to follow his dreams. He knew that his dreams were going to take him places that it wouldn't be fair to have a family and go (IE, music industry). He followed his dreams. When we met, he was ready.

Not everyone believes that you have to be married to be a "Whole" person. They don't feel the need to add more children to a crazy world. They like having the freedom to come and go as they please without having to answer to someone else.

Some people like me never attract anyone. Many people think I'm ugly & crazy & laugh @ me. Same with one of my brothers.

Very few people never marry. Some marry later in life, some marry early, have a bad experience and divorce.
I imagine being gay, mental illness, physical illness, drug and alcohol addictions are among the reasons why the very few people never marry.
