Get a Toyota Camry or a Honda Accord. They will run for ever if they aren't beaten like crazy. They are also really safe and cheap to fix (and they don't need to be fixed often anyway).
Stay away from American cars! They suck. Period.
(Especially stay away from Cavaliers)

Best bet in my opinion, would be either a Honda or Toyota, purchased from that dealer. I have a 93 Civic, with only normal maintenance, the car has been bullet-proof. American cars just don't have the quality and dependability of imports. That's why imports are outselling domestic automobiles. Congratulations, and good luck with your first car.

Most Japanese's cars are reliable and cheap. They are also easy to maintain in terms of servicing. Honda on the other hand also gives better fuel efficiency.

I swear by Toyota, but Honda is also known for lasting. I would steer clear of American cars. (I feel really bad for saying that!!! Sorry) American cars are famous for early transmission failures and cheap plastic parts that constantly break.

I'd say get a Honda. They last longer and they hold their value.
