As soon as the active duty portion of the contract is up and he receives a DD-214 separation form. He needs an Honorable Discharge, and probably an R-1 reenlistment code, saying they want him back.

The sooner the better. The longer you wait, the less benefit you have when changing services.

As a bonus, he will be considered "Prior Service Experience" and will not necessarily have to go to boot camp again. If he does have to go to boot again, it might be more of an "orientation" type boot camp, without all the mind games.

As soon as he has discharge papers in hand. The recruiters have to do extra paperwork, and he has to pass a PT test before he can join the army, but the marines I've known who join the army don't like it.

If there is an honorable discharge a person can join any other branch immediately and the sooner the better. The longer you wait you have the possibility of losing rank or having to retrain.

And hopefully your MOS will translate for you. Good luck, I am glad at least 1 'Jar Head' has the good sense to join the 'right' branch of service. ;-)

His contract shows what date he is legally out of the USMC. He can sign up the next day.

He will have to attend AIT to learn whatever job he chose, then be assigned to his permanent party.
