You did not give any important details...such as what the warrant is for, what the bail is, previous history, etc.
If the warrant is for something minor, then he will have to go to court and be done with it. Otherwise he may have to stay for months or years. All depends.

A bench warrant is a variant of an arrest warrant, which authorizes the immediate on-sight arrest of the individual subject to the bench warrant. Typically, judges issue bench warrants for persons deemed to be in contempt of court possibly as a result of that person's failure to appear at the appointed time and date for a mandated court appearance. Bench warrants are issued in either criminal or civil court proceedings. Arrest warrant must be supported by a signed and sworn affidavit showing probable cause that a specific crime has been committed, and the person(s) named in the warrant committed crime. In most jurisdictions, an arrest warrant is required for misdemeanors that do not occur within view of a police officer. However, as long as police have the necessary probable cause, a warrant is usually not needed to arrest someone suspected of a felony.

Three separate issues.
First, the bench warrant was probably issued because your friend failed to show up for some other matter -- and that matter still needs to be resolved....
And your friend would wait in jail until the judge could hear that other matter, which will probably be a few days.
Then, on top of both of those, the judge may hold the person in contempt for refusing to show up in the first place (which is what prompted the warrant), and that could also entail a few days jail time -- depending on the circumstances, and how angry the judge gets about the situation.

You still call this person a freind? You do know you can pick your friends right? WHy would you hang around sometone that has these issues? It's time to run away and get new frinds that live a value driven life and will keep your negative exposure to the police to a minimum.

$50,000 bail is not for a bench warrant your friend got into some serious stuff. He will have to stay in until he gets the 50,000 together.

It depends on the offense. If it was just a traffic ticket then it will be just one night in jail and he pays the fine but if it was for a more serious offense then he could be in for awhile. Go to your states web site that offers info on this subject or your cities info. You might also consider a public defender, they're free.
