I have a 1 gig SD card in a Canon digital camera, model S2 IS. It had lots of pics on it when I accidentally -formated- it, and I wonder if anyone knows a good program to get the pics off it. Freeware would be nice. (There are some video clips on it too).

Thanks in advance.

and

can both be used for free to recover photos.

Good luck!

And remember, always format your card in the camera, NOT in the PC.

Once you formatted over the card, there is a chance of recovering some of your files (photos or videos), although it is not guaranteed to recover everything. Most of the time, even with a format, these files are not completely deleted. Only with a true file shredder and format program can you achieve an almost blank slate (and these programs usually write over disks multiple times and in multiple ways so that nothing can be recovered). Anyways, these programs are called Data Recover programs, and I recommend being careful when looking for them on a search engine.

Be warned though: even recovered files may not be "whole" and may be corrupted.

Here are some to look at:

(No installation needed)

EDIT: I checked out a couple of data recovery programs, and Im starting to wonder if you need to download a specific one that handles images and videos. So while you are at it, it might be useful to find a data recovery program that specifically handles images.

When photos videos and other files are delete from your canon S2 IS digital camera, they are never truly deleted. This is because that the actual data of those deleted media are still stored on digital camera memory card and not erased away. However, the camera file system will mark the space as free so that when you use digital camera to shoot video or take picture, the space will be used for new files. Same thing happens when you reformatted the sd card of your digital camera, all file table will be emptied and all the space of memory card wil be marked as available.

SO, after digital camera memory card reformat, or you deleted photos videos files from digital camera, make sure that you do not save any new files onto digital camera memory card (including flash card, memory stick, micro sd, sdhc, sd mini card, etc), do not use camera to take more photos as you may risk writing over the space of deleted files that you are trying to recover!

You will also need an appropriate camera recovery software. I recommend 001 File Recovery because they are able to recover more deleted files from digital camera memory cards, not only deleted or corrupted photo video files, but also after digital camera memory card reformat. You can download the camera data recovery software for free from:

Yes, excellent program available from "lexar". It is called image rescue 2.
I have used it as a professional many times.
Well worth the price to "save" and maintain your card.
