You have a place to stay and you have consistent reliable care for your one year old now. I know you and your mom are having a lot of conflicts and it's stressful but stick it out. You need time to study for your GED and pass it. Take that time now. Make your plan consist of steps - first, your GED, then the job, then save some money and then become independent. If you calm down and do each step, you will be much more comfortable and so will your son. Good luck!

Personally I don't think that your mom is holding the baby over your head, I think your mom is concerned because at 17 you are not considered an adult in most states. Maybe she is concerned about your education, I am glad to hear that you are going for your GED, but what about college. It is very difficult to raise a baby without some sort of college degree. A full time job is nice, but without a degree you are probably still going to need some type of assitance with day care, food, etc. I think this is what your mom is looking at. Can you say you can honestly handle working full-time at 17, studying for your GED, cooking cleaning, and caring for your baby by yourself without getting tired. Can you handle the responsibility of paying rent, utilities, and still spend time with your baby and try to have a social life at 17. Being on your own at 17 is not as easy as you think, you become a target for men and boys who want sex, because with a baby they know that you are sexually active, and if you are not careful you will find yourself pregnant again. Again I honestly feel that your mom cares for you, and she just wants to see the best for you and her grandbaby.

kathyw is right you will have to take one step at a time. As long as you have a roof over your head and someone is helping you take care of your child, you are very lucky. Do not rush getting out on your own, sometimes you have to work hard to be independent. You are only 17 and you may not be able to do everything on your own. You Mother has the extra burden of having you and a child around, and it is best if you understand what she is going through in the situation along with you.

The only way for you to be emancipated is for you to prove you can support yourself without having to depend on public assistance. I think though that in most places once you have a child you pretty much are responsible for yourself and your kid and can do what you want.

What state do you live in? In TX you can move out at the age of 17 and you parents can't do anything about it.

I would check your state laws, but I think once you have a child you are emancipated. I don't think she can do anything to you. Good luck and god bless.

Just do it.At least you are being responsible for taking care of your child rather than rely on welfare payments.Just throw thatback at her .There is lots to consider though.Even though you aim at getting a job you will still need childcare.Your life and your choices.
