..and if so, is there anything special I need to know concerning how to do it? For example, one answerer said sensors and cannon plugs...thanks!

Just do the engine swap and reconnect the sensors to the newer engine. The on board computer will addapt to the newer engine.

Yes they will interchange. Just be sure to use the wiring-harness from the 87 or you will run into problems getting it to run.
