Most of my kids were making it to the toilet by the time they were five or six, but my oldest (15 now) had her last hurl-on-the-floor when she was 12. I DIDN'T make her clean it up herself - Gosh, she had a 104 fever and she was miserable enough, already. I did have a hissy-fit the whole time I was cleaning it up, though, and after she felt better I asked her to please head for the bathroom if she felt like it was even remotely possible that she might puke, or at least keep a trashcan with a plastic liner in it beside her bed so she can dispose of it without my awakening to the dulcet tones of her dry-heaving on the hallway floor.

Many kids get scared when they start to feel like throwing up. So, they often don't react fast enough. I would say people begin to more reliably avoid making puke messes by about age 13 or so. It's not weird that your 10-year-old sister had a couple of puke accidents. Actually, if you pick on her too much, she might end up being more nervous when she gets sick and thus more likely not to make it to the bathroom.

All of my older kids could do this by the time they were 5 years old. They very rarely have any accidents and would go to the bathroom on thier own. Before 5 years old, it was a little crazy and sometimes it would come up, but by 5 they knew to go to the bathroom.

I was probably 5 or 6 when I figured out that the toilet is the best place to throw up. I guess it varies. Just make sure you inform her that the bathroom is the best place to go.

i had plenty of accidents because i didnt want to throw up so i waited till the last minute, then i threw up n tha floor. but i learned when i was like 8. the best place to throw up is outside because when you throw up n tha toilet it just makes you gag more.

Interesting. Why is she thowing up at all, let alone not "that often"?
Sometimes there isn't any warning, it just hits all at once.
Also interesting is that my dog knew from when she was a puppy to go outside to throw up, but not any of our cats, ever.

Get the thrower upper to clean up after herself.
Tell her to get paper towels, wipe it up and even use spray to clean the surface later.
This should be taught as the consequence of the behavior.
Atter one or a couple of clean ups, they will ask you where to throw up with the minimum work. Ergo you show the toilet bowl or the sink and how to turn on the tap to wash it away.
