Oh yes.... that was actually my first thought on the movie.
"It's better this way... they must be scared for their life, but it's for their own good".
It's like.... showing us why religion was started in the first place, only under much more "ideal" circumstances (created for a "better life" instead of for "power and control").

I thought the movie was dull and boring. M Night Shalaman really stank the screen up with it. I was glad to have only paid to see it on DVD.
If there were an underlying message, it was that fear will kill you. You had "enlightened" intellectuals deciding what to do with their lives. I did not consider it an attack on religion, as much as it was an attack on the educational sector.
The bottom line, though, is that religion can and will kill you. It takes a relationship with Jesus to make it through this world.
I would really love to see Hollywood portray a born again Christian, who loves Jesus, as anything other than a psyco, knife weilding killer that locks his family up in the basement while he watches porn on HBO.
But, my movie wouldn't sell tickets and Christians are easy targets.
