a cd presentation, like an audio recording with both the bride and groom and the parents inviting guests to the wedding

a dvd or e-presentation slide show of the couple--pictures together and with friends and family. the last slide should be the invitation.

instead of sending it on paper, have it painted on a piece of fabric, or onto a piece of wood and send it.

write out the invitation in the sand and take a picture. email the picture.

send an e-vite (kind of cheesy)

use old newspaper! paint a black square in the center of the news paper and use white or silver paint to write out the invite, then "deliver" the news to your guests.

Instead of skipping the invitation - since older people may not understand the reasoning for an email - try getting seed permeated paper and send the invitation with a RSVP card that is also seed permeated - on the back of the invitation invite them to plant the invitation and celebrate with flowers the love you hope to have celebrate on your wedding day - then when you have registered your return cards donate them to a kindergarten for their Mothers day gift project it will be a great duel lesson for the teachers and child alike (treasure both your mothers). The added benefit is you have reduced the foot print of the fuel used to deliver the invitations and RSVPS and spread a little color and joy to all you love. Don't forget the thank you cards should be permeated too (maybe herbs to say thanks for the flavor you have shared with us). A written invitation is expected and this would be a good way to do it. Good Luck!

There are a lot of ways to have a "green" wedding. Instead of "saving" paper consider reusing it by having invites created out of recycled paper. Have them rsvp by phone, email, or wedding website (the knot.com and brides.com host guest lists and accept rsvps). Also double side if possible, for instance instead of two sepearte sheets of paper with a map and hotel info, i did a map on one side and the info on the back so it was only one piece.
Visit the websites listed above or any other wedding website or search engine and lookup "green wedding" or "eco-friendly wedding".

For everyone who is suggesting send emails or telephoning, I'm going to say this. As a guest, I wouldn't think much of a wedding where the couple didn't even bother to mail an invite--it looks like the couple doesn't even care about their own wedding--and if they don't care, why should I? I'm all for the environment and all, and saving trees and natural resources, but you can still mail a paper invite, and should. If you don't, it looks like you don't want to take the time to invite people properly. Look for invitations printed on recycled paper, using soy ink. You can probably do them yourself as well--you don't have to have layers of vellum and cardstock, you can do a simple 4X6" card with the information printed on it.

I would not attend a wedding that I got an invite for by e-mail. Send out paper invites. If you are really concerned about saving a tree, do it on recycled paper.

Send save the date cards at least 6-9 months in advance. This way people can ask for time off of work (if necessary), make travel arrangements (if necessary), make a plan to lose a couple pounds and find the perfect outfit. For the engagement announcement, just do it now. I would assume you will do the engagement announcement, then a marriage announcement after the "Big Day"...If you are not doing both, then do the engagement announcement a couple days/weeks before the wedding.

There is nothing you can send in place of a wedding invitation. You cannot send an email. Use 100% recycled paper and ecofriendly ink instead. Below are a couple of links, you can find more at any search engine

You could always try the evite website BUT you should take into consideration those who do NOT have access to the internet. Not everyone has a computer, or a printer, or internet access.

I also like the recycled paper idea.

An invite is an invite. Those are people wanting to save on costs, and emailing/evite's are the way to do it. Kudos to you and your fiance on finding ways to save money!

For a wedding it would seem to be in very poor taste to not have formal invites. Although you could email, call, and otherwise contact people, i'm sure many people (especially odler ones) would consider this rude, or in poor taste.

Consider recycling your paper and making handmade paper invites, then getting the paper professionally printed on, so they still look nice. Handmade and recycled paper can include things such as flower petals or confetti, so these can look classy and one-of-a-kind!

I have also seen those slightly transparent plastic invites. those could be an option.

Any thing you do to save paper will either be very cheap or very expensive...
an e-mail or phone call for a wedding probably won't save much paper any way...because people will write the info down...
You could do something fantastic on fabric, but, they would still need packaged...paper
If you have them hand delivered...the amount of gasoline is far worse than the paper you would have used.
Metal plaques engraved...very expensive still require packaging...????
Sorry I think if you go with a cotton paper instead of wood pulp, you would be doing better...Good Luck and Congrats!
