I disagree with Matt. Baking is not hard, it just requires precision. If you want to make cookies from scratch I would suggest you at least have a scale (we always weigh our items in a kitchen we never use volume unless its water, milk or eggs). And a stand mixer is a blessing. You can find some simple formulas for cookies online, but always be reassured that just because something doesnt come out right the first time, and you followed the instructions perfectly, doesnt mean you cant bake. It is usually the formula is wrong or the directions in the formula is wrong. In baking there are no recipes, only formula's. It is an exact science, and there is no reason why you cant do it.
Experiment with different recipes, and trust your senses to know when your baked goods are done. Dont let anyone tell you you cant do anything from scratch. Kudos to you for wanting to learn.

The trick is to follow the recipe exactly. Then, if it doesn't work, figure out exactly why it didn't, and note it down. I always put a tick or cross next to recipes in my recipe books, so I know if I should make it again or not. I also write down any alterations I made, or that I intend to make next time. Things like if I needed to add more or less of something, if it needed to be cooked a lot longer, if I want to try and see if a cake recipe will work well cooked as muffins, etc.
The most important thing though, is that if you follow the recipe carefully and it doesn't work, it's the recipe that is wrong, not you. So don't be put off your cooking attempts :)
I suggest you look up a recipe for Anzac biscuits and make them. Even if they don't turn out quite right, they'll still taste good. Unless you burn them, so be careful you don't! Set an alarm, don't rely on yourself to remember.
Happy cooking, and congratulations on being sensible enough to learn! I know someone who is in her 30's and can only cook 2min noodles.

Magic Peanut Butter Cookies
1 egg
1 cup sugar
1 cup peanut butter
Stir together.
Drop spoon full onto cookie sheet. Flatten with fork.
Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes. More or less time depending on your desire for hardness of the cookie.
Allow to cool before removing from pan or they will break.

The best thing to do is get a recipe for your favorite cookies and follow the instructions exactly. I applaud you girls. I didn't learn how to cook until I was 19 years old. The think I did was follow my instructions exactly. Tell me what you want to bake & I will get my recipe for it.

just use cookie mix. There no shame in using them, they taste great. U could try "jazzing them up"(as rachael ray wud say). Be creative. u could add white chocolate chips to the chocolate chip mix, different flavored extracts etc. You are probably better off doing this because u are going to be less likly to screw it up, because baking for scratch is very hard.

Hey, you have to start somewhere. Just go to the local library and borrow a few cookbooks, or look up some recipes on-line.
