I lived in DC the last 2.5 years so I've seen and done it all.

First, go to the national zoo. It's at the adams morgan metro stop or you can drive there and see the overhyped panda baby :) The zoo is great and it's free...and also near nightlife in Adams Morgan if you're looking for bars and rest. later on.

Day 2. Go to the smithsonians and the national mall. It's one big strip so you can go see Abe, the capitol, do a few museums, etc. It's also a short walk to the whitehouse. As far as dinner or nightlife goes, there's none in this area. For something different, I'd go into Georgetown (lots of shops, waterfront dining, etc.)

Day 3. You can visit the Pentagon in Arlington (check the webiste b/c you might have to get tickets in advance). Also arlington cemetary on the blue metro line is a great place to go, esp. if you're looking for a short activity and driving home afterward.

Here's some suggestions, depending on your interests. I've included some unusual ones to give you options over and above ones you'll likely be getting from other folks:

Like Culture? Go to ticketplace http://www.ticketplace.com and see a play or other performing art event for half price. The Kennedy Center also has free concerts - check out http://www.kennedycenter.org for information.

Museum Goer? Check out the National Portrait Gallery - it recently reopened and it is amazing. Much more sobering is the Holocaust Museum. The Corcoran has amazing exhibits.

Like the Outdoors? Check out the Zoo, or the National Arborarium - both are free. Go on a walking tour of U Street - lots of history and learn about the "Black Broadway" where such luminaries as Duke Ellington once lived and performed.

Special tours include the Embassy Tour, which happens once a year http://www.woodrowwilsonhouse.org/index.asp?section=calendar&file=calendar&ID=11 - this year it's in September and Georgetown has an annual garden tour - it's usually in the Spring.

Finally, a trip to the monuments is a must - but go at night - it is dramatic and extremely moving.

have a great time in DC!

The Washington Monument, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and the White House is on one end of the Mall downtown and the Capital building with the Supreme Court behind it on the other end. All along the Mall, a grassy area running down the middle, are art galleries, museums, including the Air and Space Museum, and the Smithsonian Institute. I don't see how you can beat that. I think the National Cathedral is great or the Mormon Temple although farther out by a half hour and the temple by maybe 45 minutes. Great Falls is an hour an a half if you prefer nature

visit the museums on the mall. Best of all they are free. The holocaust museum is on 14th st also if you want to visit that. Go to Georgetown if you like to shop or if you want to get a beer. Adams Morgan is a great place to visit. Very cultural and great places to eat and drink. There's a phillips seafood buffet on water street. If you go to digitalcity.com and go to washington, dc there's a whole list of things to do , and places to see. Also, look for special events DC has a lot of festivals in the summer.
