He has no criminal record at all, and has been clean and sober for over 5 years.

In the past he abused cocaine and alcohol.

Can he still go into law enforcement?

Any police department will do a comprehensive back ground check on an applicant.

That will include talking with past friends, family, teachers, employers.

If, or should I say, when, the Cocaine thing comes out...... No... he is done. That will completely disqualify him.

And depending on the level of "alcohol abuse" that will be a huge negative as well.

Most law enforcement agencies I know of will disqualfiy you if they find out your were abusing cocaine. Serious stuff and hard to get off of. This crap of people saying it makes great officer. Majority of officers I know of despise people with drug habits. It's exactly what we are against.

I don't know maybe I'm not the norm here but I'm damn proud to be on a department where we do not have dopers working.

Yes. I've seen some damn good law enforcement people, highly trained....with an inside "feel" for the underbelly of the streets. These people have that special edge that makes them go out and snag the bad guys who afflict damage on law abident society.

Yes....they're drug AND alcohol addicts--but they NEVER let it interfere w/ their law enforcement duties.

It comes down to "don't ask; don't tell".

It all depends on the agency hiring. Some city pd's will not hire you if you've ever done felony drugs. They'll catch this in the background investigation and polygraph.

However, if you're honest and up front with this information chances are with that much time lapsed it won't negatively affect him much if at all.

After all, they're not looking for angels, just honest people.

as long as he has no criminal record and passes the drug test...5 years should get him get a clean result. your friend should be good. i think it'll actually help him catch other drug dealers because he's been in that situation. just dont tell the recruiters or the interviewer that he's abused drugs and alcohol.

Depends. All departments have a backround investigation. Most do not allow cocaine use in your past. Some marijuana use is ok, as long as it was a long time ago and very little.

I doubt it though.
