If all you want is a free solution, Windows comes with a video editor, called Movie Maker. You can find it in your Start Menu, unless you've deleted the shortcut there. It actually is found in the Program Files folder, in the Movie Maker directory.

But if you don't have a firewire port (also called an iLink interface by Sony) and a firewire cable, you can't transfer the video anyway. Make sure when you buy the cable, that you buy one with a mini plug on one side (for the camera) and a standard plug on the other end (for the computer). That is typically what you need. Check to verify if that is what you need for your hardward, though.

Once you are connected and powered on, the computer will detect the camera, and you will be able to run Movie Maker and import your video, edit it, and output if too!

That is your cheapest solution, and it's pretty good for newbies.

Windows Movie Maker will work just fine, however, your computer needs to have a Firewire port so that you can connect it to your camcorder using a high enough speed to avoid having poor video quality.

If you don't have a firewire port, you can get a Firewire PCI card at Fry's for a good price, then install it and use Windows Movie Maker. You'll also need a Firewire cable, also available at lots of electronics stores.
