First of all I'm assuming your a girl because of your pic and your name but if not most of this won't pertain to you lol. 6 foot one is pretty tall for a girl but I would say to be able to easily go through boot camp you should weigh around 180. 190 at most unless you are as muscular as a guy. I think your a good canidate for the navy because no offence but females still aren't on a regular basis put into the fighting zones and the navy dosn't usually have to worry about that. It seems you have everything lined up to join but you should talk to a couple of the people in the navy about recruiters and stuff. They have been through it and know what to do. Maybe the navy website will help. http://www.navy.com/ My cousin is joining the Navy and I plan to join the Air Force so hopefully we will see you there!

I am going out on a limb here, but I am betting that you scored fairly low on the ASVAB test. Everyone works damage control. In the Navy, you are a Seaman, Airman, or Fireman. All MOS' fall into those categories. Usually, but not always, damage control personnel fall into the Fireman categories. It has been 20 years, but Fireman MOS' are those such as Fire Control Technician, etc.

I was an ET2 after 4 1/2 years in the ole Navy (hard to promote during peacetime -- I probably would have promoted to ET1 in today's Navy).

You receive a full range of shots. Penicillin would only be given if you were sick or decided to get VD while off at Liberty. There are other alternatives to Penicillin.

Recruiters are recruiters. Much like Marketing and Salespeople, they are born liars. Treat them that way and you will do fine. Get everything in writing.

As a DEP member, you are an Inactive Reserve. You will go active once you leave for Basic. After Basic, depending on your contract, you will be either active or reserve. The Navy isn't a very good place for first time reserves as you to on long cruises, etc. For reserve duty, I would go Coast Guard, Army, or National Guard.

You need to lose weight. A 6'1", although being tall, should not weight over 180 unless you are a weight lifter. If you are overweight, you will have problems in basic and afterwards. Sorry to say that large sailors don't make rank as fast.

And don't listen to John. He doesn't know what he is talking about. Although there is now a specific rating as such, there wasn't one in 1980. It is one of the lower ratings such as BM or Boatwains Mate (given to those with the lower ASVAB scores). It takes a pretty high ASVAB score to get to be a Fire Control Tech. Nearly the same as Nuclear or ET's (I think ET's are now rolled into the Info Tech ratings).

My advice: Get into something you can use on the outside. Damage Control Techs are not in big demand for private industry. Neither are BM's, or Boatswain's Mates,

Good luck.

if you want Active duty, you CANNOT go to Boot camp the summer between your Junior and Senior year and then off to A school after you graduate. that is for the RESERVES only.

guess what.. YOU DON'T KNOW. you are incorrect in your assumptions, and the recruiter is RIGHT. Considering that's his job, don't you think you ought to lose the know it all attitude and listen to what he has to say?

Delayed Entry Program is merely a period of time between enlisting and shipping out. as a 17 year old, you may NOT ship out unless you have all custodial parents' written permission AND graduate High School. DEP does NOT mean Split Option Training. It's just that what A school you get determines when you leave for Great Lakes, as they line up your graduation from boot camp to line up as closely as possible to the start date of your A school.

For instance, My step son enlisted last April in DEP as a 17 year old who was graduating HS in June. His ship date is the end of November, because he is going into the Aviation field, and that's when a class starts up in Pensacola.

and what is this PA duty you talk about? Public Affairs? those are OFFICERS, not enlisted personnel, and you need a 4 year degree to even be considered for PAO. and the Navy takes less than 25 new ones each year.

DC is the Navy's version of a Firefighter and emergency repairs. they are NOT limited to strictly firefighting skills like you would expect on shore, at sea is a whole other ballgame. they also do emergency repairs to ship's hulls and infrastructure.

A damage Controlman (DC) is a rate where you do alot of dirty work. The DCs work on firepumps, with power tools, and other such jobs onboard. I personally would not recommend it. Take the ASVAB and see what jobs you qualify for.

Penicillin. If you have allergies they will give you a red dog tag and instead of getting the good ole PB shot like the rest of us you'll instead be given antibiotics in pill form. The whole purpose behind all these shots is to help prevent you from getting sick while in bootcamp. My piece of advice: If you have a shot record, bring it! If you've had shots recently then you may not have to get so many of them in boot.

You have to have a high school diploma to join, so don't even bother joining DEP until your senior year. After you graduate then you'll be sent to boot camp and after that either a school or out to the fleet, depending on what rate you get. So use the time you have to continue getting in shape and losing weight until you're within the recommended limits.

Best of luck to you!

Do not, repeat Do not listen to Mr. Phd.
Navy veteran of 14 years.
The rating (not MOS) of Damage Controlmen is somewhere between a shipboard firefighter and Hull Technician. The Engineering ratings are known as firemen which includes electricans, machinest mates, and interior communication technicians to name a few. Fire Control Technicians are twidgets. They have nothing to do with fireman.
A DCman takes care of hoses, pumps, learns the layout of the ship, learns fire fighting, flood control, and nuclear, biological, and chemical weapon decontamination.
You will lose weight in boot camp. I went from 210 to 173 in two months. I was also 17 years old. I'm not sure what you're talking about when you mention PA, my course was pretty laid out when I signed up so I didn't look at many rates before I went in. I was nuclear power program and an electricians mate.
They will ask you if you are allergic to penicillin or eggs and you will get many other shots as well.

Go and see a recruiter face to face. Why the Navy? Don't do it because your sister did. That is the wrong reason to join a certain branch. What do you want to do with your life? Think about that, then visit the various branches to see who has the best training for what you would like to do. When our daughter joined the Navy her recruiter told her the only thing he could promise her is training and a paycheck. DO NOT let them tell you anything else. Where do you live?

Hey man, the United States military isn't summer camp. Not only do you have to lose weight, you will lose weight. My daughter went to high school with this kid and he was about your height and weighed more than you do but he came back from boot camp about half the size he was before. I think you should switch from the navy to the Marines. On second thought, they are looking for a few good men.

Go to a recruiter. If you want in, they'll get you in. A box of rice krispies is a good candidate for the Navy.

Sigh, why do you want to have people tell you what to do? Dont you want to be an independent, a free thinker. Why would you want people screaming orders at you? C'mon, a true patriot wouldnt allow themselves to sign up for a beuarcracy that restricts creativity and programs you to automatically obey.
