You should get "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do" by Bruce Lee.

Read the whole thing. You can start anywhere. Work with one thing than just move to another. There's no rush

Ah that brings back memories of my high school days when I used to think I was such a badass who can kick anyone's butt : P Anyway, I used to own those books along with the "Tao of Jeet June Do." And my advice is ignore the first book, it's merely an introduction to self defense and skims thru the possible techniques you might use to defend yourself, it's more of an advertisement than an actual how to book. The second book on basic training is the most useful of the series. From it you can get a good idea of the basic fundamentals like footwork, posture, stretching, conditioning and power building drills to get you started. If you gotta have only one, I'd buy the second in the series. The 3rd and 4th are for advanced lessons that can also be found in the "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" book. So if you own the second book and "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" you basically get to have a good idea of the art. But you still need to learn by sparring with a partner, otherwise the books are useless.

There are 4 books in the Fighting Method series Basic Training, Self-defence Techniques, Skills in Techniques and Advanced Techniques. I think the one large book you mention is the Tao of Jeet Kune Do which was the book he wrote while he was injured after receiving his spine injury.
