Most people believe it was wrong to use religion to justify slavery and denying women their right to vote. Why is it OK to use religion to deny gays/lesbians their right to marriage?

I do NOT think it is okay to use religion to deny homosexual couples the right to CIVIL marriage. If heterosexual couples have the right to certain legal and financial protections and benefits by being married, then those same protections and benefits must be available to ALL couples.

However, I DO think religious institutions have the right to refuse to offer SACRAMENTAL marriage to couples who do not meet their qualifications for such a religious union. Just as it is inappropriate for the government to confer or deny rights based on a religious preference, it is also inappropriate for the government to force a religious institution to act in a manner that is not consonant with its theology.

Frankly, I think we'd all be a lot better off if spiritual marriage and civil marriage were thoroughly and permanently decoupled. Getting married in a church should not automatically secure any legal benefits for the married couple. From a legal standpoint, I think *everybody* ought to have to file for a civil union, and I also think the word "marriage" should be removed from government regulations. That way, churches gain total control over their much-valued "marriage", and the government oversees the impartial administration of the rights and privileges of civil unions.

Because sin is sin and no sin is justifiable, regardless of what it is, so why should gays and lesbians be any different? They know what they are doing is against God, but they chose to do it, so don't expect Christians to justify it for them.
