The discomfort of heartburn or indigestion occurs when digestive juices ( hydrochloric acid) and food from your stomach back up into your esophagus. Your stomach lining is protected from acids that form during digestion but the lining of your esophagus is sensitive to the burning sensation of stomach acids. That's why you feel discomfort or pain.
Foods themselves don't cause heartburn but they may aggravate the condition by stimulating acid production. A problem with the esophageal sphincter may be involved, too. Foods high in acids such as citrus fruit as well as fatty or highly seasoned foods, may also cause problems for some people.
Heartburn isn't dangerous, just uncomfortable. And it can be treated with antacids. Consult your doctor about the best type for you; antacids can interfere with other medications. The danger can come if you ignore a heart attack, thinking its simply heartburn. If the pain continues or if it happens an hour or more after eating, call your doctor immediately!

Ok, contrary to most beliefs, heartburn is a LACK of acid in your stomach. Its when the tiny bit of acid in the pit of your stomach bubbles up and hits your throat. Tums is the worst thing you can do, since its alkaline and your stomach needs more HCL (hydrochloric acid). Tums will work superficially, but in the long run, you end up with a much worse problem. Essentially, your acid/base balance is out. Try taking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before meals, increasing slowly to a shot. Also, drink lemon juice water upon waking.

Also, don't mix proteins and starch since your digestion is already compromised. That means no meat and potatoes, no meat sandwiches etc. There are some great books on food combining - try Healing with Whole Foods for one.

Heartburn is an easy one to fix when you understand the mechanisms. Go for the long term cure rather than the quick-fix band-aid. I'd also recommend a liver cleanse...

Heartburn is caused by having too much acid in the stomach, or having the stomach contents back up into the esophagus. It is made worse by overeating, and very spicy foods or acidic foods can make it worse as well. You can use over the counter antacids. If you have it very regularly you should get checked out by your doctor. You can also have pain from an infection or a stomach ulcer.

It has nothing to do with your heart burning. Your stomach is producing extra acid that might become acid reflux. It's when you don't feel 'right' in your stomach and the easiest fix is an antacid. Then comes the heavier guns like the purple pill from the doctor. If you have it, look up Purine List. It's a list if foods and it's acidity. Telling you about which are safer to eat for low acid and the higher acid stuff to avoid for a while. This help?
