Or are there certain cupcake recipes that are different from cake recipes. I am new to cooking and I want to impress the new inlaws with something as simple as a cupcake.

no biggy :]
i am 12 and every year for my birthday i have made cup cakes for my class mates and they loved them :]
just buy a box of cake mix and and the egg and the oil and the water and then get an ice cream scooper and that is enough batter for 1 cup cake then just put it all into one of those metal cup cake cooking thing and put it into the oven for the same time that it would take a cake then let them cool for a half of an hour then take them out of the pan and frost them :]

You can use a basic cake recipe for cupcakes. Just make sure that you use the cupcake pan and add liners or else they'll stick to the pan. The temperature for baking will be the same but the time will decrease since cupcakes are much smaller than a cake.

RED VELVET CUPCAKES

ingredients
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 ounces water
2 ounces red food coloring
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon baking soda
preparation
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare cupcake tins as directed as directed in the recipe you are following.

2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.

3. Add eggs and blend well.

4. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to the butter mixture.

5. Sift flour and salt together into this mixture.

6. One at a time, add the following ingredients: buttermilk, vanilla, and water.

7. In a small bowl, combine the vinegar and baking soda. Fold it into the cake batter. Make sure it's incorporated, but don't beat it.

8. Pour the batter into the cupcake tins. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the cake springs back when touched.

9. Remove from oven and let cool for about 10 minutes, then turn the cupcakes out of the tins and onto a rack to finish cooling completely.

If you're using a mix, the back of the box shows the changes needed for cupcakes. If you're starting from scratch, the recipe is basically the same. The only big difference in cooking time. Good luck. Cupcakes are very "in" right now.

Your previous answerers are both correct! Scratch, muffin mix or a cake mix all work.

You just want to bake the little fellas for less time, and use paper liners or 'pam' your muffin tins before putting in the batter, which, by the way, you only fill your tins 2/3 full.
Let them cool a few minutes in the pan before you try to turn them out or they will break or fall apart.

Frost when completely cool or just dust with powder sugar and serve with a scoop of sorbet or ice cream--top with a strawberry half and mint leaf ( or sprinkles or mini choco chips etc.) and you're set to make some good impression!

No you cant, unless you modify the temp. and amount of time, you should also practice making it first so you dont screw up when it is time for it to really work. best of luck, your better off using a cupcake recipe, go to foodnetwork.com and type in the box cup cake or even on google. Good luck!
