We need to start making changes; the ice caps are melting, and were depleting our natural resources, oil, and lumber ect..

I can't help but feel helpless, I feel like the people in power and have the influence and money to make real changes won't, because their driven to much by dollar signs.

Plus I've also been thinking that a good majority of people are too comfortable with their life styles, and don't want to change to make a difference in this world.

I also get the feeling that many people would like to deny, and or ignore that the world is suffering.

We are affecting our environment, the human population, pollution, and were exhausting our resources, so I don't believe we can just throw up our arms and say it’s not our fault.

I'd also just like to say that if we ignore this, it won't go away, and by the time it seems that most people will take notice is when it’s too late. We won't be able to reverse time and regain all we have lost.

What can we do?

Hi,

I agree, it does sometimes seem a little overwhelming! However, the good news is that if everyone just did a little bit we'd cut a huge amount of carbon so quickly! For example, gadgets left on standby squander electricity worth £740m each year and are responsible for 4m tonnes of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere! If everyone just stopped using standby that would be a great start!

I do not believe there are any simple steps to help stop global warming. I don't know if there is much a single individual or group of individuals can do about global warming. You appear to believe that the primary cause is human behavior. Why this may be a factor, other things are affecting global warming. And these factors play more a major role than human behavior. Volcanic activity is a major factor.
The sun is emitting more energy than it has in human recorded history, it is even warming the other planets in the solar system. The sun rays are more intense and the light spectrum we receive from it is changing and affecting plants and wildlife.
I believe it is going to take a lot of scientific research to come up with viable solutions.

I can see you are very concerned by this but what have you personally done to curb your energy habits? You say the government and corporations are to blame have you stopped buying from them? If you don't know what is actually broken can any action you take truly be effective? If the most likely cause of climate change has never and probably never will be touched by Man what can we do to change it's output?
40 years ago we were told the world was going to come to an end as we know it, we would have to wear spf1000 and couldn't use deodorant because we were killing the Ozone. The people making this claim didn't tell you that they only had the ability to study the Ozone for a few short years really not enough time to come up with a viable theory for such a large system. But people panicked they blamed the evil Corp. for killing us. But hey it sounds good and it generated a response even thought it did nothing to what was happening to the Ozone. 40 years on we now know that the ozone Layer has what appears with more study to be a natural cycle. these same scientist and others who would have problem working somewhere that results are demanded are eating at the trough of global warming and be call profits of the new cult of global warming.

Stop buying and using the electronic games, the batteries used to power them, the chargers for the rechargeable batteries, computers, lap tops, cell phones, CD players, DVD players, "junk" home theater systems, black berries, and a host of other devices which were not in use in the 1970's. While computers are here to stay, limit yourself to a new one only when the current one is beyond economical repair. We really don't need all of the gadgets now in use to have a happy and harmonious society. Toss the cell phones as well, they and everything else named are a source of pollution both in manufacturing, and as this stuff lays in the trash dumps. To much to ask, then you really don't want to do anything that would be effective to change the global warming problem. ALL of the things we want that are not immediately important to basic living cause the use of energy, resources, and thus produce green house gases that could be avoided. All of the finger pointing and ranting about what industry is doing is really quite hypocritical. If "you" didn't want "it", then "it" would not be produced and the green house gases attendant with the manufacturing of "it" would not exist. We, the people of the earth, are the cause of what we are whining about now. That is the plain truth, and is also a most inconvenient one. Want to really put a squeeze on the problem, start with yourself and what you buy. Can't do without various things because of the effect not having the stuff would do to your way of life, then don't complain about global warming. The why is quite simple, your so much needed "stuff" came from a factory. That factory uses electricity that came from a generating plant that is most likely spewing green house gases into the air. ":You" are therefore responsible for the problem.

No, worldwide warming isn't the problem. it quite is been warm everywhere in the rustic in the previous. dissimilar circumstances. worldwide warming is largely a media hype. We possibly are headed for an ice age, given histroy, even nevertheless it is going to take 1000's, perhaps hundreds of thousands of years in the previous it is going to become an issue. individuals are in touch approximately worldwide warming becuase industries are producing chemical ingredients that injury the o-zone layer, inflicting extra sunlight rays to hit the earth. nevertheless the technology at the back of this may well be actual, there is not any reason for undertaking becuase the human effects on the ozone are insignificant. One volcano eruption possibly reasons extra injury to the ambience than all autos in u.s. over the span of a year. as nicely, scientists say the o-zone is the healthiest it quite is been in a protracted time... and it particularly is the business age! Why are human beings afraid? Media hype brought about by potential of enviornmentalists. the theory is that the better temperature will reason the ice caps to soften, inflicting the sea to upward push, and dramatically effecting the earth's land by potential of flooding it. the o-zone's been in terrible shape previously in heritage and this under no circumstances befell, so why are human beings afraid now?

1) Recycle all your own waste especially organic. Main culprit of environmental problems.
2) Take public transport to reduce petrol consumption. Lesser exhaust gas released to environment.
3) Use energy savings light bulbs. Switch off all electronics after using them. Set your aircond to at least 25 degrees as minimum.
4) Plant more greens to absorb carbon dioxide.
5) Bring your own bag to grocery. Say no to plastic bags.
6) Avoid open burning.

Ignore negativity from those who base huge life decisions on their distaste for a particular outspoken politician.

Simply reduce the amount of resources that you consume, and become active in your local government (vote, petition, run for office) in order to ensure that your local environment does not become a chemical dumping ground.

As has been said before, there are quite a number of things. In addition to the list by "s p" (which I shall post at the end, to give credit where credit is due) there are a few additions I would suggest.

The first new thing is to check your house's insulation. While keeping your thermostat a bit closer towards outside temperature is good, if you have double-paned windows and that nifty fiber glass in your walls (or, as has been done, recycled newspaper which works nearly as well and is even more "green") then most heat will stay on whichever side of the wall you want it. (In the winter, your house stays warmer, in the summer it'll stay cooler.)

Another prospect worth exploring is, if you happen to own a car which runs on diesel, convert it to biodiesel. While some may say, “but it's still burning fuel,” the special thing about biodiesel is that it's “carbon-neutral”, which is to say that all the carbon that is burned comes from plants in the same decade, and in theory, an equal number of carbon atoms will then be re-absorbed back into the plants to make more biodiesel. In this line of thinking, one could (if so inclined) make a petition for your city council to convert a portion of the city's buses to biodiesel.

The third thing I have to add is to be mindful of which companies' products you are buying. If there are two similar products, and only one company is known for being particularly “green”, choosing the (perhaps inferior, perhaps not) product made by the green company supports them and their way of doing business, thereby encouraging it to stay green. What's more, if enough individuals adopt this stance, if offers companies incentive to “go green” by having environmental friendly practices become an edge over their competition.

Finally, I shall combine what s p, siameezermom, and I said into a single list, giving credit where it is due. (Parentheses indicate a change I have made.) [Brackets are citing the original author.]

1. Recycle [s p]
2. Walk/ride a bike/take the bus [sp] (Carpooling is another method.)
3. Change your light bulbs and other household appliances to energy efficient ones [s p] better known as compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs. [siameezermom]
4. Conserve water - don't overwater the lawn or run the faucet while brushing your teeth/washing dishes. But a brick in your toilet tank. [s p]
5. Keep the AC/Heat a few degrees higher/lower than you normally would. [s p]
6. Buy recycled products. [s p]
(7. Ensure that your house is properly insulated, such as double paned windows and fiber glass wall and ceiling insulation.)
(8. Be aware of where the products you buy come from, avoiding products with a wasteful means of production.)
(9. Take a moment to write a letter to your state and/or federal assemblyperson, perhaps vocalizing your support of biodesil, wind farms, or some specific problem or solution that you've been thinking about. It has been said that if a Federal Representative receives a mere seven individually written letters from separate people about the same topic, they will bring it to their full consideration. That requires a tiny amount of effort on your part to bring an issue to the attention of the heads of the nation. If you are concerned about a problem or believe you have a solution, please take a few minutes to send a letter to your state or federal representative.)
