911 is not a joke.
i have worked as a 911 operator for 5 years.
it's amazes me how over 60% of the calls we get at 911 are non emergency calls.
people being to lazy or just not bothering to find the non emergency number to call on.
not to mention the cell phones with no service that kids get a hold of and play on.
it really ties up the lines for people with genuine emergencies
don't call 911 for power outages, call your power company
don't call 911 for traffic and weather updates, listen to the radio or watch tv
don't call 911 for non emergencies, all police dpts have 7 digit #s that you can call to report non emergency calls, and for information and advice
when you call 911 from your cell phone you get directed to the most local 911 center. you don't get philly if you are in chicago if you have a pa ph #
we don't have a directory of every other police dpts' ph #, if you need the police in another area than where you are at - your best bet is to call 411 or information and get the direct #
911 is not a joke

911, its an emergency number that's called to get help for what every reason you need to have help with. i suppose at times its been used as a joke by kids to have a laugh, but for the most part its a very important tool used in the states. England has a system close to the same thing i believe.

I'm a old white guy and even I knew that it was a song and video by public enemy. Mildly humorous at the time but that was before the 9/11 tragedy. And if anyone really thinks our 911 is a joke, try it in China or Pakistan or Iran (use whatever number they choose) but be prepared to end up like the guy in the video cause they ainta coming till the bombin and shootin is over.

Bobbies are called Bobbies, due to the fact that Robert (Bob) Peel was the man who started policing in the U.K.
Britain, uses 999 ONLY for dire emergencies. They do not take kindly to calls, saying their neighbour's cat is stuck up a tree; your bag has been snatched or other happenings of a similar nature. The same applies to the use of 911 in American.

I think you have heard someone say it is a joke inasmuch that in some city's there is such a delay at getting an answer when people ring the number.

What kind of joke would that be? You call 911, you get the emergency services.

For someone belonging to the culture that invented the language...you sure don't express it very well.
I can't tell if you are being sarcastic, attempting to be funny, attempting to be rude and callous, or just an ignorant S.O.B.
No intelligent answer is possible unless you clarify your statement!

I suppose at least it doesn't make 666 when turned upside down.
Not sure about the punch line.
Not sure why we Brits call our police bobbies or coppers either
