Don't know the number of farts a person does per day but the volume is about 750cl. Daily that's almost 5 billion litres of farts per day.

Most of a fart is nitrogen, about 15% is methane. So per day just under ¾ billion litres or ¾ million m³ of methane is released from farts.

Methane has a mass of 58.1g/m³, the total mass of methane released by people farting is approx 43,000kg per day or about 16 million tons per year.

In terms of volume, this is about 1/2,500 of all grenhouse gas emissions but because methane has a greater global warming potential than carbon dioxide it works out to be a little under 1% of the overall contribution to global warming.

But then you need to account for the different atmospheric lifespans of the greenhouse gases, the proportions of them that are recycled naturally and the chemical processes undergone by methane in the atmosphere. Factoring these in tells us that by volume farts ≈ 1/10,000 total greenhouse gas emissions and 0.25% total greenhouse gas contribution.

Is this what you spend your time thinking about all day
how many farts are released per day
but collective cows farting must be a lot worse

so you think we should invent a two wheeler that drives on bio gas, that we connect to with an enema attached to a tube going to the engine

There are plenty of greenhouse gasses that are emitted into the atmosphere and absorbed by various processes.

We know that the *excess* CO2 that is causing the problem is from fossil fuels, based on the isotope ratios observed in the gas.

So these various "natural" sources of greenhouse gas are not the problem.

While that may be, all of the animals in the world add to the problem, as well as the rotting of plant matter. I guess we need to stop farting, stop the bio-mass rotting, and keep our animals from farting as well. That should help.

What about the intellectual farting that goes on in Yahoo Answers? It gets pretty foul in here sometimes.

also dont forget cows! they fart alot and probably contribute alot more

but dont most people fart inside? then wont it get trapped inside the house and make you not need a heater in the winter
i think cows contribute more than humans because they fart outside but we fart inside...well most of the time lol

Who came up with the number.. 14 a day? I work with a guy who does that in an hour. He must be covering for people who can't keep up the pace.

This isn't really a big problem in the grand scheme of things
